Origin and significance of the evil eye

Regardless of whether the notion is genuinely mystical, or merely an archetype expression of the human mind, the "evil eye" and the various protection symbols that evolved with the concept across numerous cultures is puzzling to me.

Superstitions of sorts are nearly universal, but this particular case is very specifically represented around the world throughout the ages.

When people fear 'the look', what deeper emotions or ideas (conscious or otherwise) occur in the person who is evaluating the situation; is it merely envy or jealousy within the other than scares them? Is it a psychological manifestation of a biological urge to defend ones genes and memes, ones accomplishments and investments, culture and destiny?

If you believe in the evil eye, it has power.

All magic requires is belief to be effective.  Just look at the placebo effect.

I was referring more to how ubiquitous the phenomenon is.


In the case of intentional harm, belief in the power of a protective symbol will not accomplish much. Because unlike the placebo effect, which is mutually exclusive to the person's ability to believe or be persuaded, the outcome of the evil eye is behavior on behalf of someone else.
