Oysters on recycled paper

Winter is fast approaching and I have realized that pasteurizing straw outdoors is going to be possible, but a real pain in the ass trying to keep soaking water from freezing, etc..  So now I am interested in trying out shredded paper as a substrate.  I have grown on phonebooks before with decent results, but I can't be going door to door asking for people's old phonebooks and newspaper, so I found a couple paper recycling factories in the area that hopefully will sell me truckloads.

So my question is do I need to sterilize the recycled paper with a bleach solution when I spawn to it or should the paper be resistant enough to just wet and use?

Bleach?
Bleach is not a good choice, it produces chlorine, which is toxic to fungi. It does not dissipate too well, so you will end up killing your spawn.
I would pasteurize it the same way you would do straw. So, it does not sound like you will gain anything by going to paper, IMHO.

cardboard is easy to find, cheap or free and more resistant to contamination that most other paper products. The main problem with any type of paper product though is flavor, I'm not alone in thinking that it effects the flavor.

i use a ratio around 20g of lime per gallon of water and that seems to work well. i may even up the lime next time. this is probably one of your better options since it requires no heat at all. you can soak indoors in a large container overnight, drain and spawn.

Bleach at 1 tbsp per gallon will not hurt mycellium according to Staments in the GGMM.  He mentions 'bleach bombing' entire rooms and substrate.

Bleach never stopped these. I used bleach to pasteurize my subs for more than a year. You soak for 6 hours then rinse. Then inoculate. They don't absorb the bleach and they don't seem to mind it either. I wouldn't even be surprised if it wasn't even present after colonized. They always ran through the subs with vigor.

Is bleach or lime pasteurized substrate less susceptible to contamination than heat pasteurized substrates?  Would it let me use hay?

I'm smack dab in the middle or rice country, and I can't find rice straw!  I can get rice hulls from mills, but not the straw.  Most feed stores sell coastal, timothy and/or alfalfa hay.  Maybe I have to go out and cruise the rice farms looking for the stuff, but I don't know how to find those either.  Argh.

Bleach and lime baths are a means to provide us with a way to prepare these substrates only if we have no other means to do so. The leachate is toxic to our environment if disposed of incorrectly. I just wanted to point that out first.

They are not as effective as heat, but can provide a high percentage of success if done right. I have never used hay as my sole substrate. I have used it to supplement my mixes, but not with the bleach method. Maybe someone else has and can shed some light on that. If you did use it I think prolonged submerged pasteurization would be best for it.

I've always heat sterilized phone books, but since lots of lime is used in the paper making process, it might be unnecessary.  All I can suggest is to try it on a phonebook or two and see.

i do not believe that, i think hay has a bad reputation.  It is a good substrate provided that it is used under specific conditions such as type and effectiveness of sterilization used as well as the individuals circumstances.

Straw has plenty of microscopic tubes and pathways for the mycellium to enter and digest.  Hay is much more solid and the mycellium must work harder to eat through it.

So which substrates will give you the highest quality fruits?  Straw is superior to wood based substrates as far as productivity is concerned, but if I'm going to try marketing oysters to restaurants I'll need to produce something superior to what they get from mushroom growers with big operations.

Are mushrooms grown on hardwood logs better?  It seems logical to me!  I didn't notice any huge difference between paper grown oysters and those I grew in bunker bags, aside from cap size and thickness.

My next bunker bag project will involve a small mountain of partially decomposed green pecans.  I freakin' hate squirrels.  Damn tree rats.  One tore open a bunker bag to try burying pecans in it.  Damn tree rats!!

Straw works great for oysters.  If I switch to cardboard/paper in the winter I will amend it with sterilized wheat bran, which I would hope would improve the flavor, although I haven't noticed much taste difference from paper vs straw oysters.  I would assume that wood grown oysters probably do taste the best since its their natural environment, but honestly, I have never ate a wood grown oyster.

books and paper are more prone to contamination IMO. The cardboard is more airy and less likely to get contaminated. I have never got contamination on cardboard. Also I pasturize my books on top of my barrel when pasturizing straw. I use about 4 of them to hold down the straw in the water. When I am done I have nicely pasturized books and I use any left over spawn I didn't use to inoculate them. After they are done I bury them in my yard and poof.

I have done cardboard with oysters (probably the same strain as Lipa would have used).  Used bleach to pasteurize.  I hadn't ever used bleach before and wanted to give it a try.  However, I don't recommend the method unless you have no other method of pasteurizing.  The bleach and it's byproducts are harmful in large quantities to the environment.

I think there is a general consensus that mushrooms grown on regular old cut logs have the best flavor. I have talked to a number of chefs who say this is true.

For oysters I personally think the best substrate for flavor is straw. Although to the average person I doubt a difference would be noticed.

That being said there are many advantages to growing oysters on supplemented sawdust in bags shiitake style. Better shelf life, ability to isolate contamination and using less spawn are the main ones. I am in the process of changing over from straw to all sawdust with my commercial operation.

No no . Although I am sure if you used a lot of straw reishi might fruit from it. What I said was that I place the books on top of the submerged straw to hold it down in the barrel. Since the books are submerged also they are pasteurized and I spawn reishi to them or oysters or whatever then bury them in the yard. I also add straw to my sawdust blocks as a supplement  and to speed colonization. It works good as an additive.
