Declining literacy levels/de-emphasizing the importance of reading
    #9075560 -

What does everybody think about the declining literacy levels in the US?

I think it's mostly caused by people's reluctance to learn and interpret things for themselves as they would rather take someone else's opinion as their own.

The past 100 years of increased technology has caused literature to fall from the most important means to gain information (besides direct human conversation) to literature being viewed by kids in school as nerdy.  Why read when you can watch a movie, it means less work/effort and movies are more visually stimulating.  Kids see education and learning as something uncool and the kids who are interested in learning and education are viewed as dweebs who nobody would want to hang out with.

Our president, George W. Bush, hardly shows the comprehension of the English language that someone of his stature should.  Based on his poor grammatical skills it is safe to assume he doesn't read.  He'd rather be told someone else's opinion of what is happening and take it as fact, rather than reading someone's interpretation and coming to his own conclusion.  This gives children the view that reading and understanding the human language is not essential to become successful.  George Bush seems to be a passive observer, and sends a successful image of a ignorant man to the nation's children.

Also, nowadays teaching involving reading in school is seen as more of a chore than an enjoyable exercise.  It's sort of like the "eat your vegetables, they are good for you" type of deal.  Reading is encouraged by the idea that it's good for you so do it, instead of how it should be; it's good for you and you will enjoy it.

Thankfully, the internet is in full force and children are learning that reading is necessary to survive and thrive in this society.  Of course there are the idiots that type out their words phonetically and continue to stay put in their ignorance, but the internet also increases the desire for kids to want to learn.

Any other ideas/opinions on literacy and how to solve it?  I have recently begun reading again heavily (I used to read all the time when I was 7 to about 15) after my dad has convinced me of its importance and I'm writing an essay about the declining literacy levels and how to solve this problem for English.  Thanks everybody.

It's sad how bad it's gotten, not just with reading and literacy, but with pretty much everything else, especially math and science.
Math is constantly portrayed as 'uncool' and no one really seems to care about science; the U.S. consistently scores lower than nearly all industrialized countries on tests like this one

We need to get our shit together.

I tend to blame the hip-hop culture.

It is popular to "be a gangsta" and talk "ghetto"

The ability to read, and comprehend what you are reading, is essential to success.

Not sure what to do to remedy this phenomenon though

Interesting take.  First off, I'd be curious as to how one defines "literacy".  Rather than falling, I would bet the number of college and high school graduates is in fact increasing (causing an increase in "literacy").

I think reading and writing are very valuable, sought after, and important skills that are still emphasized.  However, they are focused on largely as professional skills, and not as a form of entertainment which is perfectly fine in my opinion.
