Any web designers out there?
    #9072634 -

A friend of mine as asked me to talk to some web designers because he has an idea for a new website. Luckily I'm a member here and I know there are quite a few in this community.

Without unveiling his master plan for the site, I will tell you what he's looking for. It'd be a business website based on searching. I'd imagine the search function will require some coding. And really, thats about all I can tell you, but it should give you an idea of the work involved.

He was trying to find out what kind of web designer(s) he would need for such a site and what type of pay that would be expected. Since it's for a business, he would want someone capable of professional work.

Web designers, what would something like that run?

Edit: website would also probably require someone who knew how to do databases.

I have no idea about the cost and it'd be really relative anyway. I've seen websites that should have cost $500 produced for $30,000 (usually government websites, like websites for towns). My advice in that regard is to check some web designer forums for an idea of what people would charge (try http://www.killersites.com). He'll probably need a web designer, a database guy and a script writer (PHP or Javascript or something like that). Sometimes the database guy will write the scripts too, but I wouldn't count on it.

Nah, any real website guy will know all of that. What you've described so far doesn't sound too hard. You could probably get it for decently cheap. You also need to know which route you want to go. You can hire a freelance person for much cheaper than it would be if you decide to go with a company that designs them. My uncle is a web professor (or was) at the University of Chicago and he runs his own design business. I had him quote something for me and it was crazy. Depending on exactly what was needing to be done, I could possibly do it.

Alright, well I'm not getting nearly as many answers as I had hoped on The Shroomery.

Apparently this guy has been brainstorming with a group of people who have their MBAs and has come up with a plan that could end up being quite lucrative, so he's pretty serious about doing this.

How exactly would he go about "shopping for web designers"?

theres not much included as to what you need...

If it is an active DB that would need updating even after the websites completion it can become very costly and would constantly need to be updated on either a daily, monthly, or yearly basis...

But simple DB searching and the such is fairly cheap and not hard to implement in a website...

It really just depends on how much coding is going to be involved for the web dev as to what the end price will reflect.  Since it looks more DB based scripting will be involved as for such a business...

Commercial work can become very costly if you goto a web team.  As someone suggested above a freelance designer would be the cheapest, but I would highly suggest looking at their portfolio to see it's the type of professionalism that your looking for..

I've done freelance web design many times before..  Feel free to ask anymore questions..

Well it turns out that he's going to need algorithms for his searching and the DB would probably have to be updated monthly at the very least. The more the idea grows, the more the complexity of the site grows. If he ends up going through with it I'll let you know.
