Freelance programming?
    #9978308 -

Does anybody know a freelance programmer.

I want more than anything to be successfully self employed. I'm considering teaching myself computer programming.

How much money could I expect to make coding at home?

I know a freelance programmer. It is a stressful job having to find work and to also please the employer.

You are looking at 75-125k a year if you are good at what you do I would say. It also depends on the language, who you work for, and if you are a lead programmer or someone underneath on the team.

I'm a freelance web developer, which is kind of similar. To make anything close to the $75-125K mentioned you'll need like 10+ years of experience, an impressive portfolio of big-name clients, and probably a couple people working under you. Check out elance.com or rentacoder.com to see who you'll be competing with - most of them live in India or former Soviet republics where the cost of living is extremely low. You might get lucky and land a high paying gig early on, but I wouldn't count on it at all. Do it because you like to program and you like the freedom of working for yourself. If you're planning to get rich right out of the gate I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I don't plan on ever being rich. I'd just like to be able to work for myself and have a retirement plan other than a shotgun to the mouth at age 65 (my current plan).

Yeah, me too i guess. Though this "Professional Development" class I've been taking is making early retirement seem like a good idea.

It's a class on how to be a corporate suckup; formal dinners, play golf with your boss, your job is your life, etc...  :cruelworld:

I imagine that some money could be found with a good knowledge of programming, systems/ server admin, and marketing.
This would give you independence from having to deal with other people. You would be able to run the whole show yourself.
