    #5690667 -

Has anyone tried this as a side job? How did you handle it? Did
it work out well?

=) I've had lots of experience breaking and fixing my own
computers. Were you able to get enough customers?

Did you pay taxes?

Yes I did it freelance.

Even set up a small company selling PC's but it has all fallen through now.

If you can put up with the condescending idiots (most customers) then you'll be fine.  I used to get really pissed off when someone was ranting for hours about their harddisk space being fine but the computer saying there is a memory error.  The amount of times I had to explain that a harddisk and a memory module are different but very few of my customers actually understood   They were just plain pig ignorant!

On the plus side theres excellent money.  I was earning £25 an hour at one point but there wasn't a huge amount of custom so you'd only get a couple of hours work every few days.  Then you gotta go and do all the paperwork to keep taxman happy although it isn't that hard but its annoying.

The big thing for any business is getting the customers.  I advertised, did leaflet drops and put up business cards.  The return for this was practically nothing and probably didn't warrant the marketing costs.

I found word of mouth to be the most effective way of getting customers - if you meet people and gain there repor and trust then they will always come back to you if they need anything!

I'm thinking about setting up a computer warehouse at the moment...
