It's produced by heat decomposition of Ammonium Nitrate and then further purified by various methods. If you do it wrong, it will probably kill you in a very horrible way.

Ammonium nitrate is commonly used as a crop fertilizer and a powerful explosive. Timothy McVeigh (the OKC Federal Building Bomber) used a mixture of Ammonium Nitrate and Nitromethane fuel (ANFO) to make an extremely powerful bomb.

combustion in chemistry means addition of O2... I think

So that would be NH4NO2+O2-->N2O+OH+O2

Hmmm. It's late and that my reaction doesn't make sence. Am I missing an ingedeant in the reactactant side because the product doesnt make sence.


ARRRGGG. I litterally just was about to post this when I went back and noticed you mentioned CHNO2(.  I'm still gunna post this but i'm going to try to balance the reaction with every indgredient to see what all is produce.


Ok from what I've calculated I came up with this balanced equation.

2NH4+2CH3NO2+11O2-->4NO2+7H2O+2CO2

So your product should be your NO2 water and carbon dioxide. 2 gasses and a liquid. Liquid should be easy to get rid of leaving you with the 2 gases. Now I need to figure out what to do to seperate the 2 gasses....

Why am I doing this again???


the easiest way to clean the gas is to use like 5 8 foot tubes on a slant and filled with water. just push the gas through the water and youll come out with pure nitrous

On Mythbusters when they did the nitrous oxide powered confederate rocket, they made their own nitrous and filtered it through water filled tubes in the exact method you described. Adam was curious and took a whiff of the finished product and said it burned like hell.

Stick with professionally manufactured nitrous oxide unless you absolutely know what you are doing. I'd imagine it would be a pretty painful death if it gets screwed up.
