NEW YORK - A New York Police Department lieutenant apparently committed suicide Thursday, days after he ordered another officer to fire a stun gun at a naked, distraught man who then fell to his death, police said.

Lt. Michael W. Pigott was found at a former airfield in Brooklyn, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said.

"On behalf of all the members of the New York Police Department, I extend deepest condolence to the family and friends of Lt. Michael W. Pigott, who served with dedication after 21 years," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement after the family of the officer was notified of his death.

Why does it always have to be a fucking conspiracy with you people. Is it that unbelievable that this guy was so disturbed by the fact that he made an order that ended up killing someone, that he took his life?

I have yet to talk to the coroner, the friends of the officer or his family, so I take the evidence provided in the article.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Logical or warped and twisted, take your pick.

Dude, some cops from Portland beat up a mentally challenged guy, and he ended up dying. To protect and serve. That's RIGHT! Whether he was killed, or committed suicide, it's fine by me. Yeah his family suffers, but so does the naked mans family. So, fuck the department for using excessive force in a very inappropriate manner. It states that using a stun gun is prohibited near an elevated surface.. As a commander, or Lieutenant, he should have known that. It's his job to enforce policy. Fuck him.

Because the death was not justified. The officer gave an order to use a taser to control and apprehend the person, but instead he fell and died.

They were just trying to get that guy under control and made a decision that they thought would work the best, but ended up killing him.

It's not like if someone pulled a gun on a cop and he killed the guy in self defense. That's a whole different ball park. But even that can fuck with someone. Even if the shooting was justified, there are many police that have taken their lives after killing someone in self defense.

This was a case of a mentally disturbed, but non threatening man that was killed as a result of a bad judgment call by the officer. If I were in that position, I'd probably get low enough to kill myself too.

I just read that the mother of the mentally retarded guy was standing there and witnessed him fall to his death. That's too bad.

It sounds like the cop was trying to do the right thing. He made a bad call that ended with the guy dying and felt horrible. The fact that the guy is dead and that it falls directly on the cop that made calls shoulders would be enough if he was in fact a decent person trying to do some good.

agreed. sounds like the officer was merely depressed. I couldnt imagine if I had ordered someone to be to tazered, they died, and then I found out the person was mentally handicapped. Had to be a horrible event to experience for both sides.

Cops are human beings too, even if most of them are douche bags

Understatement of the year....:nonono: That cop just felt like tazing a retartd and for that he got his just desserts. Weather it was self inflicted or not. I can live a little easier knowing that there is one less pig patrolling the streets.

did you read the article. the cop who killed himself wasnt the one who did the tasering. He just ordered it. Tasering is usually a non-lethal method used to control someone who is insubordinate or out of control

still a bad situation but the cop didnt kill him
