Reuben Fanatics!

CALLING ALL REUBAN LOVERS!!

this recipe will literally make you mess your pants!  well maybe not but this is seriously one of the best recipes ive ever had.  if you love reubens, this will blow any sammich youve had out of the water.  i have to warn you, its a bit pricey the way i did it, worked out to roughly $4 a serving, or $32 per tray.  the corned beef and lacey swiss cheese(less sodium) were both Boars head deli brand.

:drooling:

Reuben bake

2 tubes large cresant rolls
1lb corned beef
1lb swiss cheese
1 cup thousand island dressing
1 1/2 cup drained saurkraut
1 beaten egg

unroll and spread 1 tube cresant roll dough onto a greased 9"x13" baking dash.

bake at 375 until golden brown.

layer 1/2 of the swiss cheese on top of the baked cresant dough, then put all of the meat on top of that, then mix the drained saurkraut with the dressing, spread on top of the meat evenly, layer the rest of the cheese on top, then roll the other cresant roll dough on top of that, closing any spaces and gaps, then paint the entire surface with beaten egg.

bake until golden brown.

let sit and cool for 5 mins before cutting and serving.

its simple, doesnt take long to cook, and it is so damn good.  also holds together very well.  im thinking about trying this again in a week or two but substituting the corned beef with smoked turkey for a cheaper alternative.  at $30 a tray, this is something i would only be willing to do every once in a while.

let me know what you think!

Sounds good.  Do cresant rolls come in pumpernickle or marble rye?

I was disgusted when subway tried to sell a reuben on white bread(never bought one but saw the commercial).  Also, some pastrami would make a great and traditional addition.

no, i think the best you could do is whole wheat roll dough.  i wasnt incredibly excited about using premade rolls, but i really wanted to make it and didnt have time to make my own dough.  the next time i make it im going to make my own, pumpernickel sounds awesome. never made it though. maybe i should try to make a loaf before i screw this glorious creation up.

mmm pastrami is another great meat.  although it was more expensive, which is why i opted for the corned beef.

let me know what you think of it when you do!

also i should note that not only does it hold up well, but i took a square out of the fridge today for work, and it was still damn good at room temperature when i finally got to eat it. i also had ANOTHER square when i got home from work, toasted it at 350 in my toaster oven for about 10 mins.  and there was no noticeable difference in quality or flavor after being refrigerated!

It's strange, because I hate swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing.

And rye bread.

But I love ruebens.

Go figure...

As long as there is an appeal for Reuben purism going on in this thread I feel obliged to mention that Russian dressing is the traditional condiment, not 1,000 Islands
