Interesting foreign objects
    #896197 - 09/20/02 10:57 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

The following pictures are of unknown objects on straw... They are cylindrical, and on stalks. My first guess was "Oh my god, I?ve have ergot" Then I noticed that some were opaque in color, while other had changed into a dull looking, brown-greyish color... much like a freshly layed insect egg that has hardened...

I?d very much like to know what they are, since there is approx. 400 of them in this old pile of hay... I personally think they are cricket eggs, but I?d like your opinion.
If you cannot tell from the picture, I may be able to take another one, but after much trial and error.

seems to be something with larva that would burrow in and feed on the grain when hatched. I woud guess some type of moth, but that's a guess.

I actually had to light the straw on fire to kill the eggs...
Now there is a whole new wave!
Please, has anyone ever seen these before? They grow everywhere!

Noooooo!

Oh, and there was to many to be issued from one insect, if it were cricket eggs, I'd estimate that it would have taken at least a dozen of them...
Has anyone ever seen cricket eggs? Anyone have a good remedy for crickets like salt, or viinagar?
I'd like to use posion to nuke the bastards... But I'm growing some food in the general area, and I don't want to the posion to mix in with my goods...

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Just spent time on internet looking for something that might resemble what you have, closest I came was the horse fly also called stable fly. Love to lay eggs in damp straw. Crickets like dirt and loose sand. Have to say tho, never knew there were so many ugly insects out there. Sort of makes me glad I live in the great white north, insects hate to shovel snow.
