Mite questions
    #1329614 - 02/23/03 06:22 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

A friend of mine went on vacation the other day. When he
came back there were lots of mites infesting his compost trays.
Small white ones. Are these harmfull to humans? What should he
do to kill these bastards? What can be done to prevent future attacks?
Thanx

Check "An Interesting Indication of Insect Infiltration" for pics of a mite infestation I had.

I would suggest cleaning your whole area with a bleach solution. Keep your eyes open for signs of larvae. I would look for those trails as you see in my first post. The lifecycle of these mites is about 7 days from larvae to larvae. You need to irradicate them ASAP.

Will a bleach solution alone kill them or would poison be needed?

Another thing to keep in mind is that the rate at which mites reproduce is related to temperature. The wamer it is, the faster the breed.

A bleach solution worked for me.

I had this problem just a few days ago. I'd been staring through the lid of my FC obsessively for like an hour, and then noticed a tiny mite on one of my caps. Started doing research, and in about an hour there were 10 mites on the same cluster of caps. They weren't all over the FC, just in that very small area so far. I took a very diluted bleach solution (approx 1 tbsp bleach : 20oz water), and sprayed the affected area directly, and the gave the FC like 8-10 sprays and closed it back up. It's been 36 hours, the FC is still at 99% humidity, temp at 79, and there's no sign of mites. I'm not sure if this method would be as effective if the infestation is much worse, but I think if you catch it early enough it'll work. Best of luck!
