I have a thing or two I could say about Canada.

Best privacy standards in the world(along with Germany) Vancouver has been voted the BEST place on EARTH:earth: to live many years in a row. Now it's at #3. Oh noes!
Not the third best place in the world to live!!

Vancouver is also called Vansterdam, with good reason as I am sure you know.

Outside of Vancouver, in the valley, there are lots of nice forested areas,
close enough to smaller towns that you don't have to be a hermit in the bush all year just to hide tons and tons of :ganja:
Prices for marijuana are cheap. And the marijuana is high quality.
Canada has health care for all it's citizens. Need I say more on that one?

Let's look at the human development index....

The Human Development Index (HDI) is an index combining normalized measures of life expectancy, literacy, educational attainment, and GDP per capita for countries worldwide. It is claimed as a standard means of measuring human development — a concept that, according to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), refers to the process of widening the options of persons, giving them greater opportunities for education, health care, income, employment, etc. The basic use of HDI is to rank countries by level of "human development", which usually also implies to determine whether a country is a developed, developing, or underdeveloped country.
Sadly, this doesn't take sustainability into account.
Still, it's a very valid measure.
Now look here, most of the maps aren't free anymore though, dicks.
Or maybe my IP is only allowed to glance a few times.

http://maps.maplecroft.com/
Canada is indeed the best place in the world to live IMHO.
And in Canada, Vancouver is tops.
Even though I'm on the other side of the country now,

And I have more to say...
, just gimme a bit of time.

Vancouver is one of the most expensive places to live in Canada, consider it our LA except forests instead of homeless.

We are taxed on our income (which changes as your income level changes, the more you make the more you pay), personal purchases (a provincial and general sales tax apply on everything except liquor), property taxes of course. We are taxed ALOT.

We don't sell 30 packs of beer. We sell 2-4's, 5% minimum. Also don't expect cheap liquor either, we have some of the worst prices for booze in the world. 24 bottles of LOCALLY brewed beer (right in town) for 29.99 , ridiculous.

College and education is much cheaper than the states, college is around 1500-3000 a year, and Universities are about 10 000+ without scholarships or bursaries. Those are all rough numbers by the way.

Canada would be great. I'm not sure where you're from, but if you don't bring anything to the table(skills that will improve their country) then you might have a harder time getting citizenship/green card(or Can equivalent). I wonder how strict their immigration laws are?

Also, like I said I dunno where your from, but if you are from a shitty place like Toledo, or somewhere that is run down, then try to move somewhere like Wisconsin. Same-ish climate, and the people here are awfully friendly. You will have a lot easier of a time getting into grad school. Canadian schools are actually tough, as opposed to our 'everyone gets in' system.

We didn't let that family who protests military funerals come into Canada because they offended our obscenity laws. We've also got a pre-test on our immigration website people can take to see if they will be accepted. They play the game pretty damn seriously.

On a note, one of the best Universities in Canada, the University of Western Ontario. Will only accept you into their engineering program if you achieve an 85% average in all of your pre-requisite science/maths. Let alone give you any financial help.

Its a great place to live but its not the land of milk and honey for displaced staters.

EDIT: Right...Politics....We have a conservative minority government right now with elections in October or November....cant remember which.

Ok.

Yes, I wont lie to you.
Vancouver is by far one of the most expensive places to live on earth.
A crappy apartment, well outside of Vancouver, when I was there, was around at least $500 a month. With ZERO included usually. There are some really nice places that we're also apartments, everything included, for $650 in the same town.
I've also paid $750 for a really nice, large, bottom of a house.
All rooms, the backyard. Washer and dryer.

But get this, my friend in the middle of nowhere in  buttfuck Manitoba, pays... no shit $300 for everything. And he has the same thing basically.
And don't assume Manitoba sucks, ok it does in many ways, B.C. is king!
But, what Province is a rising grow star?:ganja: Manitoba.
Being rural has it's advantages.
Fastest growth in marijuana "grow ops", Manitoba. Coming up strong on Quebec, and British Columbia's asses. Ya Manitoba. I was shocked as well.

Now as for living outside Vancouver, if you don't mind living 2-3 hours outside the city you can find cheaper places. And if you are going to school, there are always plenty of people looking to share accommodation downtown

A friend of mine paid around $400 or less...with everything included, in a really sweet house. Totally kicks ass place, it made me want to sign up for college that day.
He had to share it with 3 other people though. 2 of which we're gorgeous college girls. And yes, since I know someone will ask. He did sleep with one of them. She had beautiful tits. That's all I can confirm  Yes I saw them bare. They we're great.

Whether you share, or look for a small place on your own, if my poor ass could make it there, anyone can. Although when I was working shitty jobs, it was a painful struggle.

Taxes, well Canadian taxes are higher then American ones, but you do get a hell of a lot of services. Not worrying about if you can afford to stay alive takes a big weight off anyone shoulders IMO. I have a serious heart condition. I know that if I was American, I would become a Canadian once I could move.

But it's not so crazy or anything, and it's not like you go to buy something worth $30 and it rings up as $60 after taxes. I'm pretty sure there are plenty European countries with a similar(VERY HIGH) standard of living that pay just as much if not more. Taxes, have never been an issue for me. And my Scottish father owns a business...So if they we're really bad I would have heard about it for the last 15 years nonstop

College expensive?
Uhh, I have a friend that's paying his loans back very slowly.
And they give you tons of time. Plus (don't know if this is the same in America) they give you checks, and if you need to cash 1, do that, need to cash 4 at once,  no problem. But budget wisely.

The moment my friend got his checks, he bought a top of the line brand new computer. For learning, and playing Civ4 among other things of course.

I will say it's very easy to get a loan, that much I know.
Also, the Canadian government funds small businesses and even artists like crazy. Some of the biggest bands in Canada have been put out by FACTOR for example.
And another body.(don't remember_ Basically, they help great artists out.

Ever hear of Broken Social Scene?
Or Pilate?
Thank the Canadian government for those two bands getting a solid chance.

I am not ultra patriotic, and I see problems with every country, including mine. But I will politely disagree with anyone that wants to claim Canada is not the best country in the world.
Beer: It's cheap and plentiful. As is Maple Syrup. :drooling:And weed of course.
That's why we eat so many pancakes. Oh, Canadians smoke tons of herb.
Ya, more then the rest of the Western World combined I believe, the figures we're shocking. I don't remember the exact numbers though, I'll check*
At the very least we smoke more then all individual countries.

And BTW, on a more grim note...
As climate change gets worse, fuel prices rise, and we have more droughts etc
We Canadians really are in a luckier place then most.
And those that living with the Hydro electric power in B.C. are IMO the luckiest. Close enough to Alberta, and all the benefits of B.C.
Canada has the majority of the worlds fresh water.
Of course the American government and some Canadian snakes made us give up control of our water. And if we have a crisis, we have to still sell it off.

Things aren't perfect. But I'm happy to call Canada home.:earth:
It's a big fucking planet. I think I totally lucked out!

(some typos and shit I'm trying to fix, but I hope all that typing is useful to you in some way, I'm quite tired, and high. So there may be a few rough spots)

Fuck their weed seems to be a million times better than ours. They say we have good pot too though. Who knows. I would move up there if I wasn't felonated.

Dude, cannabis is not legal in British Columbia. It is still illegal in all of Canada.

But if you're caught with a small amount of grass you usually don't get sent to jail.

.. I am not entirely sure you are correct. There are green zones, just like amsterdam. At least when I was up there. It was essentially legal only in Vancouver.

And to the OP, you're very welcome. I thought this thread was worth the time.
I wrote that, checked it, smoked a little more weed.
Fell asleep for hours, woke up, and saw a post about HolySnap's struggle with the gaids.

Happy I could help.

Good Luck, where ever you decide to live bro.:sheesha:
The funny thing is, if I ever did live in America(I wouldn't but don't take that so harshly...Americans seem to love being offended by someone liking another place better  You super proud bastards...)
But if I did live there. It would be in Washington State.:yesnod:
I may be far far out east ATM.
