something that confuses me about mycelial growth

Hi again, it's me! You know, my friend is using a pure verm casing layer, and I got to thinking: how come the mycelium is able to colonize the verm layer if the verm has no nutritional value? I thought that when the jars were fully colonized, that there was no more food left for the mycelium. The mycelium colonizing a nutritional casing layer would make sense to me, but how come it's able to colonize the verm layer?
Surely it doesn't eat the verm, so what is happening? I am assuming that the mycelium is using its stored nutrients to create new cells, so theoretically it should be able to extend itself until it runs out of nutrients, and then it wouldn't be able to make fruitbodies and the network would just die there waiting for food. Is that right?

no. your thinking is flawed in many ways.
to answer your question, the myclium is simply growing through the vermiculite.

The mycelia doesnt grow through the verm to absorb nutrients, it just grows on it because it can and because a light source is usually above it.....
I may be wrong though! I never really heard an answer because nobody ever wanted to know/cared.....

There's usually no light above it during postcasing/prepinning actually.

What's with the recent rash of cultivation questions invading the General Questions forum?

the mycelium grows like roots do, it sends out tendralls. the lines of mycelium are nurished by the casing layor and run throughout the moist vermiculite layor absorbing water and when they reach the surface the light causes growth on the casing surface. Nurishment is carried from the crumpled cakes that make up the middle layor to cause growth on the surface.
