camping and daddy long legs in depth.
    #8825013 -

So a commonly asked about thing and seen thing is daddy long legs and why they are always there and wtf are they up to. So i did some reading into. Turns out that they are infact predators and they do spin webs. They mainly prey on other spiders and infact kill ones that are poisonous to humans so an awesome thing to know is if your camping with daddy long legs and theres tons of em you dont have to worry that much about other spiders that might attack you. In fact they kill spiders much bigger then them and leave the corpse uneaten cause they ussually dont finish consuming em.

when food is scare they will eat each other... they also can be found eating magic mushroom apple sauce if left out.

whats awesome is the whole family of them is known as daddy long legs and there are many differnt genus and speices

i dunno what else to say other then they are awesome

i heard somewhere that they have some of the most powerful venom out of all spiders, but they just can't bite humans because their "teeth" are too small.

is it true??

Most venomous?

It is a fact that daddy long-legs spiders have the most potent venom of any spider, but that their fangs are either too small or too weak to puncture human skin; the same legend is also repeated of the harvestman and crane fly, also called "daddy long-legs" in some locales. Indeed, pholcid spiders do have a short fang structure (called uncate). However, brown recluse spiders also have uncate fang structure, but are able to deliver medically significant bites. Either pholcid venom is not toxic to humans or there is a musculature difference between the two arachnids, with recluses, being hunting spiders, possessing stronger muscles for fang penetration. [1]

In 2004, the Discovery Channel show MythBusters set out to test the daddy long-legs myth (season 1, episode 13 "Buried in Concrete"). After measuring the spider's fangs at approximately 0.25 mm (average human skin thickness varies from about 0.5mm to 4mm), the show's host was apparently bitten, although the bite produced little more than a mild short-lived burning sensation. This appears to confirm the suspicion that pholcids can penetrate human skin, but that their venom is practically harmless to humans. Additionally, recent research by Alan Van Dyke has shown that pholcid venom is actually relatively weak in its effects on insects as well[5].

According to the University of California at Riverside, the daddy long-legs spider has never harmed a human and there is no proof that they are venomous to humans.[6]

One reason why these spiders are said to be so dangerous could be that they regularly prey on other spiders, including the black widow (Latrodectus spp.), which itself can be dangerous to humans, with the reasoning that the preying spider must be even more venomous; which is incorrect. (Pinto-da-Rocha et al. 2007:4)

you probally already did on some subconscious level or something like that and that rumour about the venom isnt true, infact they dont use venom. They wrap their prey in web then spit degestive stuff in that spot killing it.

tho thats a beastly looking daddy long legs

I do not think that the daddy long legs in your picture is a spider.  Not all DLLs are spiders.

One time I had the notion that when/if we are wiped out as a culture wikipedia will be a perfectly preserved record of all our known history.

Its a pretty amazing thing in general.

Very true.  What we called daddy longlegs as kids in my area were actually harvestmen "insects" (not even insects, but eight legged invertebrate animals).  They sure look like spiders.

Actually, Harvestmen are arachnids, but a different order from spiders.  (I just researched this at the request of my 7-year-old son.)

yeah it is, if you notice the web, they actually will take other spiders webs too. another thing they do thats special is they will vibrate in a way that makes them and their web invisble to the eyes of other stuff, so it gets caught. they are also known as vibrating spiders

I don't like spiders but for some reason I never minded daddy long legs.  Any other spider in my house I kill but daddy long legs I pick up and take outside.
