Lower legs swelling (please help)
#7807341 - 12/28/07 12:57 PM (16 years, 1 month ago) |

I'm freaking out. My ankles (especially my left) are HUGELY SWOLLEN! Why why why? This freaks me out. In fact my entire left leg seems really swollen. I'm very worried...I am fairly physically fit and have been having some digestive problems lately but what could be causing this?
What should I do? How do I make the swelling go away?

did some more reading
http://www.healthline.com/adamcontent/foot-leg-and-ankle-swelling
ommon Causes
Foot, leg, and ankle swelling is common with the following situations:
Prolonged standing Long airplane flights or automobile rides Menstrual periods (for some women) Pregnancy -- excessive swelling may be a sign of pre-eclampsia, a serious condition sometimes called toxemia, that includes high blood pressure and swelling Being overweight Increased age Injury or trauma to your ankle or foot
Swollen legs may be a sign of heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. In these conditions, there is too much fluid in the body.
Other conditions that can cause swelling to one or both legs include:
Blood clot Leg infection Venous insufficiency (when the veins in your legs are unable to adequately pump blood back to the heart) Varicose veins Burns (including sunburn) Insect bite or sting Starvation or malnutrition Surgery to your leg or foot Certain medications may also cause your legs to swell:
Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone A group of blood pressure lowering drugs called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem, felodipine, and verapamil) Steroids Antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine) and tricyclics (such as nortriptyline, desipramine, and amitriptyline)
Home Care
Elevate your legs above your heart while lying down. Exercise your legs. This helps pump fluid from your legs back to your heart. Wear support stockings (sold at most drug and medical supply stores). Try to follow a low-salt diet, which may reduce fluid retention and swelling.
Call your health care provider if
Call 911 if:
You feel short of breath. You have chest pain, especially if it feels like pressure or tightness. Call your doctor right away if:
You have decreased urine output. You have a history of liver disease and now have swelling in your legs or abdomen. Your swollen foot or leg is red or warm to the touch. You have a fever. You are pregnant and have more than just mild swelling or have a sudden increase in swelling. Also call your doctor if self care measures do not help or swelling worsens.

See above. If you are experiencing any of the serious side effects as listed in bold, go to emergency. If not, then it's not to serious and you can follow the steps above(ie elevate legs above heart, exercise, etc). And if that's the case, no worries

Thank you...uh...I've never seen a body part so swollen before, I am really concerned. I think I'm going to see a doctor.
I'm worried that I won't be able to go today. I hope this isn't fatal. I wish there was something I could do now besides just propping my feet because it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

When in doubt, go see a doctor.
You can always find time to go to emergency to see a doctor. I mean, if nothings helping, it could be serious, you never know. Like liver failure or something. I highly doubt it, but you'll ease your mind by seeing a doctor if the swelling doesn't subside soon.

GO VISIT YOUR DOCTOR NOW.
Apparently you either have serious fluid retention or there is a disruption in your lymph nodes.
What probably will happen is that you'll get a diuretic. Thewy may do this in the hospital by injection or at home with a pill. Then, after a latency, you start peeing every 20 minutes or so for a few hours. This gets rid of excess fluid.
But go to a doctor NOW. It's substantial swelling and its getting worse. It may be no biggie now but it can become one.

Blame it on Dutch free health care, or my heart attack experience, but visiting Accidents & Emergencies of my local hospital is my favorite way of taking something substantial to a medic.
They're always open, no need for an appointment, and you are at once in the presence of routined medical personnel and lots of equipment is on standby to deal with whatever may happen.
Arriving at the ER with something serious calms me down better than a couple of valiums
If its progressing like you say, I'm VERY sorry that its gonna co$t you but the ER would be best.

ahh i forgot it's the states.
Yes, I rarely am caught dead at hospitals, but when something serious happens, like a broken ankle or something, I just get a ride down to the local hospital(my city only has 1, so it's kind of easy) and go into "emergency".
I'm also very sorry about the future costs, but like he said, it would probably be best to go soon if it doesn't subside

I would just wait to see a doctor as soon as I could. It sounds bad but not really life threatening... I just know I wouldn't call over an ambulance or anything for ankle swelling. It's too bad simply seeing a doctor is such a hassle.

Everything will be fine. It's happened to one of my relatives and they had their ankles/legs swelled up for a good couple days before they decided to go in and do something about it. Like wiccan said, just calmly take the steps to get yourself to where you need to be.
If you can afford it, it would be really easy to just call a taxi and ask him to take you to the nearest hospital.

There is increased pressure within them, so that's bound to feel odd. I often retain some liters of water, when it approaches 10 liter or so I head for the hospital. As you today won't be drinking 5+ liters that kinda fluid retention won't happen overnight.
The swelling will probably slow as increased pressure in the legs decreases influx. Tingling toes are normal also - it's the pressure.

It feels like it's pulsing pretty firmly...
I think I counted around 94 beats for one moment
I might have to recount.
I won't be able to do anything until 5pm...(another hour or so) because that's when my partner gets off work. (we only have one car)
Do you think I'll be okay for the next few hours? I'm drinking water now...because I remembered I haven't been drinking a lot of water later (but I have had a lot of alcohol and Absinthe.).

That's what I wanted to hear. If if felt like a weak pulse and less than 60 beats per minute then you ought to call 911, but you're nowhere near that. So far your heart is coping with the excess fluid it seems, and you're not too freaked out or you'd have 120 BPM or so.
Quote:
I'm drinking water now...
You should. The excess fluid in your legs might coexist with a bit of dehydration in your body.
Quote:
I remembered I haven't been drinking a lot of water later (but I have had a lot of alcohol and Absinthe.).
I think that's part of what ails you. If you for some reason tend to fluid retention on a particular day, alcohol use will make it worse.
They still have to find out whats up but alcohol is almost guaranteed to be part of the reason.
Hmm.. if he's back in an hour or so and the edema took several hours or more to develop, then you might opt to wait it out. If it rapidly worsens you should take action of course.

I've had swollen ankles/feet for the past week or so but I've been ignoring it...I haven't been very healthy lately so I thought that might be the cause. But then today it's just so obvious that something is amiss that I can't ignore it anymore. I have been drinking a lot more recently (holidays) and haven't been as active as I was. In fact I was going to drink tonight but now I don't know if I will be able to.

Yeah just calm down. It is probably freaking you the hell out but try to stay cool, remember mind over matter. Call 911, explain your situation and ask them to send an ambulance if you're really freakin out. I've seen really swollen feet and hands before, but not with someone as young as you.

I've been eating semi-regularly for a week or so, pretty shitty foods, health-wise. My drinking has been nightly...maybe my body is just having a reaction to all the stuff I've been putting into it.
I didn't go to the doctor tonight because Kevin didn't seem worried and I don't have health insurance. I will continue to elevate and hopefully the swelling will be down tomorrow...
I'm still kinda freaking out. I feel really unhappy with my body right now.

I can bring you right now if you want me to - just let me know. You should apply for Mass Health - if you don't have a job, you'll get approved, and health care is free.

definitely wait it out if you fit in on that list somewhere. without insurance, you'll have to pay a shit-storm of money and regret it. just go if you think your in dire need of medical attention.
my insurance picks up in a month from now and i thought i had strep throat two weeks ago. im so glad i didn't go to a doctor, i feel fine now.

Thanks, girl. I'm going to see how it looks tomorrow. If it's still really swollen, I'm going to go in. I was so anxious about it all day today that I really just want to get it fixed. But my fear is that going to a doctor won't fix it and that they'll just look at it, cluck their death, perhaps give me a pill, and send me home. So hopefully it'll take care of itself...
I'm sure having a regular routine of food consumption would probably help. I'm trying the raw thing again for now. Raw fruits and vegetables are the only things I can put inside that don't cause an emotional and physical reaction.

Definitely just try to eat healthy. I know you were fasting for a while and lost lots of weight - and maybe that could be some sort of underlying cause? I just want you to be ok! Please call me if you decide you need to go in tonight or something. Tomorrow we will be out until about noon or so, but home after that.

i dont have insurance either, i had to pay $75 to go see a doctor without it, another 20 bucks for the penicilin, who knows if i really needed it though, but 2 days later i felt just fine..but I was sick for almost 2 weeks, that is why I went in to go see a doc. But 2 days later after the visit, I got some weed so it helped a lot, I was not eating enough either.

just give them a fake name and address and 0ther info, they can't not treat you.
also i don't know if it applies to your state, but in most places you can pay like 5-20$ a month on a hospital bill and they're not allowed to hassle you about it or ruin your credit.
