Theres only one type of jar I have ever found that dont go in at the top and are wide mouthed.. (and believe me - i have checked many supermarkets!) it is:
"Bonne Maman" Jam - look for it in bigger supermarkets, it looks quite amature design, its "fresh" jam. I think they are about ?1.15 a jar.
Alternatively, you could just use normal glasses, but attach two layers of foil over the top
If you find anywhere selling 1/2 pint wide mouthed jars, please be so kind to let me know

PS I got my spores from www.mushmush.nl - they are based in the Netherlands, they are reasonably priced (free spore if you order 3) and they came within about a week of me ordering and I had no problems growing my shrooms

hey man thanks for the quick reply ill be sure to look for the jam jars... but will mean emptying jars of all the jam huh.... and if i do come across anything else, i will let you know
as for using glasses: yeah i read about the tinfoil elsewhere as well but hoping u can help me on this. if the glass doesnt have a lid and just has multiple layers of foil, wont that still leave an entry point for contaminants to get in?
thanks once again man
peace lk [edit:ps - been looking around on mushmush and they do have decent prices. i like the order 3 get one free syringe. thanks for the link man!]

i found 3 brands of wide mouth jam jars all the same jar. i found empty jars the exact same being sold for jam making but it was actually cheaper to buy the jam and throw it out!

I have been using the Bonne Manan jam jars(?1.19 in Sainsburys)They work perfect...Someone said that Habitat sells the same kind of jars for 50p,although they are a touch smaller. If anyones been to Habitat let us know.... I tried a plastic Tupperware style container in the pc but it melted It was a cheap container,i wanna try a proper microwaveable container to see what happens.... I got my first print from FSRE(thanks Eric),I got my syringes from mushmush as well...At the mo' ive got the fridge full of GT and Mexican mycelium/honey water(i made way too many jars Just need a lot more CHEAP jars....Peace

Pictured are the 1 3/4 cup size which is a bit large,I use the 1 cup size. After 3-4 uses, the cover has to be taped on. New ones with tight fitting lids would probaly even work for agar. These DO NOT MELT in the pressure cooker, but after a few uses, the lid loosens up a bit. Anno uses the pickle/mayo jars for spawn, not cakes (as far as I know). These Ziplocks work great for cakes.

No Ziplock jars over here They dont really sell caning/mason jars either as no one over here preserves their own stuff... I have seen a place that sells autoclavable straight sided pvc containers(for laboratory use)...I have mailed them to get a couple of samples and will give them a test in the pc.If they work out ok i'll let post up the results....Peace

They also sell the same jars in Asda. The jam is called "Continental" and I think it's slightly cheaper than Sainsburys.

In reply to:

The bottoms are made of polypropelene which is safe for autoclave use. The lids are not and will deform under high heat.

"They dont really sell caning/mason jars either as no one over here preserves their own stuff..." same where i am. however i did get large 3 litre jars in a turkish shop selling pickled tomatoes in them. i got a 5 litre jar of pickles too. i am still eating the bastards and dont want to toss them out even though i cant wait to use the jar! try a cash and carry which will have large jars of tomato sauce etc for catering companies or go to a local restuarant and offer to buy their empty jars, tell them youll be back in a few weeks
