Thanks Rugergirl.  I always look forward to your guns.

I'm going to have some for dinner tonight beer-battered.  Here's the thing though.  I just learned this year that the species has been split.  Supposedly these are true Pleurotus ostreatus.  They're a fall mushroom that always has a white spore print, never lilac.  I can tell the difference in the flavor too.  These aren't nearly as good.

However, I cannot eat 5 pounds in the next few days so most of these are drying and going to be dried.

Thanks for posting.  You should post in here more often. I am sure some get tired of the same old people posting in every thread.

I doubt if overpicking is the main reason for the general lack of mushrooms around here. I haven't been picking very long, but I notice that the spots I've been picking don't seem to suffer from it at all; year-to-year variation appears to have a far more profound effect on fruiting 'richness'. I think that destruction of habitat through 'management' of water level (i.e. drainage for purposes of farming), fertilization of grounds and crop mono-culture practices are the main causes for massive disappearance of mushrooms. It seems that this disappearance mostly occurred in the period of 1955-1975, which coincides with major reforms in agriculture technology, which boosted production but later turned out to be disastrous for practically any other species besides agricultural crops. Luckily, people seen to have realized this, but it will take a very, very long time to put this right again, especially due to the relative strength of farmers in terms of politics. Not to say that I don't think these people deserve a fair standard of living, but I just hope that we'll find better ways of efficient and effective farming and 'nature' to co-exist. Ah well, we're making the first step, which is to create awareness.

The project you speak of which will require the camera with a 15-second exposure time makes me curious. Are you going to capture mushroom bioluminescence?

  *sigh*  Yes, I know what you mean though I didn't know the details.  Speaking of monocultures, I'm not even a fan of lawns.  Sadly, few realize the benefit of biodiversity.

Bioluminescence?  What's that?

I have a log in a tote with thousands of Panellus stipicus pins.  By the time I get the camera they will be ready.  shhh don't tell anyone.

Rugergirl:  please do.

Lawns are ok as long as the lawnmower is jammed

The bioluminescence thing was probably somewhere in your frontal lobe, where I picked it up from a few thousand miles away. Damn, it could've been a thousand other things

  Screw the lawns.  I used to leave mine 4 inches tall and NO shorter.  Everyone around me cuts theirs like a putting green.

The bioluminescence thing was inspired by ShroomyDan.  He was the only one to attempt a picture and I want a better one for our database.  Last week the forest was bursting with P. stipticus.  I collected three logs/branches and brought them home.  I look at them every night.

:tripping:

I stumbled across a few stictipus shots on pilzepilze.de today, in particular these ones source for both is Georg Müller's highly recommended website www.pilzepilze.de, featuring a very well-filled database of excellent mushroom photos; a source of inspiration to me):

(source of both images: PilzePilze mushroom gallery - Panellus section

Note that the first shot apparently took an exposure time of no less than 6 minutes (!) at f/3.2 ISO200. This illustrates how weak the phenomenon actually is. I'm really looking forward to your results soon! Maybe I'll even try my hand at this one day as well if I manage to find some of these.

It looks like you finally got a nice batch of oysters in their prime as well as many others. Congrats!! Great pictures too!

Thanks nushroom.  Dinner was very good, more beer-battered Oysters with some onion flakes tossed into it.

Koraks, no wonder it took 6 minutes with a 200 iso.  ShroomyDan's photo was brighter but the resolution sucked.  I am hoping with the amount of mushrooms fruiting the lumens will be high enough to capture something pretty nice.  We'll see.

Just experiment and see how long it takes to get a decent exposure. Crank up the ISO to 400 if need be, but prevent doing so if possibly, sensor noise tends to be especially severe towards the darker ends of the spectrum (shadow noise).

Sounds like a good plan, Koraks.  I was thinking about using an editor to reduce the noise.  Someone else suggested using firmware to increase the exposure time.

Good advice... I would rather deal with a much longer exposure using a low ISO than deal with all the noise. My camera's lowest native ISO is 80 and I can't bring myself to ever go any higher than that.
