you should try The Dream Drugstore by J. Allan Hobson as well
it gives in depth explanation of psychedelics along with how the psychedelic experience relates to the dream state and the hallucinations produced by mental illness
I'm halfway through it... great read.

I had a basic understanding of how psychadelics/drugs worked before, but recently I've been reading a lot about the nervous system and I've learned in more detail how it works and how drugs effect it. I think I'll pick a few books up like these when I've got the cash. Its a real interesting thing to learn.

I cant waite till I'm out of school and in a descent not-so-Wal-Mart-ish type job... and my free time isnt spent reading school textbooks instead of what I really want to read.

hey newt, could you make a list of the books you found most illuminating on the subject?
my interest could be very dry (read: neuropharmacolgy)
but maybe you have a good list anyway.
my better understanding of these things come from loose and sundry sources.
that book looks awesome.
