Help Removing a Virus!
    #8789053 -

Got a virus-ed torrent. This AntiVirus XP 2008 got installed on my computer. Now it has locked out my task manager so I can't close it, and I can't uninstall it, it just errors out when I try to remove it via Control Panel. It keeps popping up to get me to buy the damn program to remove all the viruses it detected, even though yesterday my main virus protection didn't detect anything...

My computer runs fine otherwise, but it's got a grip on all my main components, most importantly my task manager. Wtf do I do?

thanks

I got that damn thing twice myself!! And to be honest once  got it I couldn't even get a virus scanner to kill it!! Just format your hard drive (long way) and reinstall, it's the only way!! Fucking RIAA!! Fucking MPAA!! I swear this has to be a corporate started virus!! I've seen them before.. Sorry, this virus is a bitch so I'm pissed, granted.

thats why you should use a separate, but crappy computer to download all torrents...at least i would, but i don't even bother, i cough up the dough.

good luck with getting rid of it.

Sometimes a clean reinstall is faster than a messy repair after getting a crapware infection. Just be sure to wear your cyber-jimmyhat in  the future, or else get ghost for restore, or something to ice your install if your gonna go a round  executing strange code lol.

WTF? Worst advice ever.

Run system restore. If the malware is stopping you from accessing system restore, then reboot into safe mode and do it. If that doesn't work, or if you have system restore disabled for some reason, then just remove the malware manually using these instructions.

Or else boot your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 couple of times during boot, just before the XP loading screen)

In Safe Mode your computer only loads the most basic things it needs, no other programs like video/audio card drivers, antivirus, msn, etc etc.

Then, you can open your correct antivirus program yourself and then check for virusses. I would get NOD32, it's really one of the best out there and it's basically free (you can easily fix the 30 day trial to infinity). You can get it here.

Antivirus programs don't necessarily remove malware like this one, because it's not technically a virus.

NOD32 takes care of almost anything. Spyware and other shit included

Been using NOD for about 3 or 4 years now, and have in fact never gotten any virus. They all get blocked instantly before they can be downloaded.

Oh that's good, yeah I heard NOD is the best.

The worst is Norton. Fuck it.

Yeah boot into safe mode scan for viruses there. Use Spybot search and destroy and Hijackthis to run a log of what is going on on your system.

Some malware and viruses can be so insideious that only a clean reformat is all you can do to really fix it. Good luck tho.

System restore is often very effective and it's the easiest option, that's why I always recommend people try it first

System restore may be worth a try, but it is often is often a waste of time. I have seen many many examples of infections that thwart a clean restore, even if your restore point is prior to the infection. I have also witnessed very savvy users waste several hours trying to remove an infection through restore and other manual means like posting hijack logs only to fail. At some point it is simply faster and more predictable to blow out the drive and start fresh. Often there are other benefits as well.

For Future Reference:

System Restore Enabled = Virus Burrow

Many viruses attack the System Restore data location, and you will be in turn restoring a virus that has been dormant.

Most times to completely remove viruses you will need to disable System Restore and remove all of the restore points <where the virus hides and embeds itself>

Disconnect from the Internet - Enter Windows Safe Mode - Virus Scanner (NOD32) - Super Anti-Spyware Program.

Afterward, click: Start> Run: sfc /scannow [or] sfc /purgecache
to repair affected system files.

(This will require an XP disc)

Also, when downloading a torrent, try reading the associated comments as many folks will let you know it's a virus before wasting your time.

Major problem with viruses is that they can infect/corrupt system files and make the OS very unstable even after it has been cleaned.

+ Get Firefox with extensions - Ad Block Plus and NoScript.

I do not believe this is the case. If a virus is present it will be incorporated into new system restore points, so you have to restore to a time before the virus appeared.

Which is why it works well for Syle's situation because he knew when the malware turned up.

Turning off system restore does nothing except eliminates an easy solution for problems like this.
