Honor, Tennis and the Olympics
    #8777214 -

Last night Blake (USA) was playing Gonzalez (Chile) in the men's tennis sem-finals. The score was 8-8 in the final set - as close a match as you could get.

One of Blake's shots ticked Gonzalez' racquet and went long. The point belonged to Blake, but the chair umpire did not see it so awarded the point to Gonzalez. Blake stared down Gonzalez who refused to even look in his direction.

I found Gonzalez lack of honor to be most despicable (though not surprising in today's world).

For the record, as an American, I would have felt the same disgust if the players were reversed.

And yes, having played many dozens of racquetball tournaments, I have called shots ruled in my favor by referees against myself when I knew that I had missed the shot.

I realize that I am projecting my own honor system onto another, but why would a player want a tainted victory or one that they did not fully earn?

Seems pathetic to me. I would rather play hard and honest and lose while following 'The Warrior's Code'.

The winner gets the cash money and ho'z.

I wouldn't be able to live with it, if it was me....
It is like taking credit for something you know you didn't do....
DIfferent set of morals, I guess....

Oh, I guess that you know me so well....!    :smirk:

No.....
I have been in plenty of situations where someone has given me credit for something that I haven't done,
and I have corrected the misunderstanding as soon as I am aware it - giving credit where credit is due....

Taking credit for someone else's win/work/ ideas are not something I want....
I have enough ideas/work/wins of my own to take credit for....
Thank you....

Letting a lie/misunderstanding of "credit" continue is no different than lying....
Is that something that you would/could live with....?

I didn't say you would want taking credit for something you didn't do. I said if you did you wouldn't be killing yourself over it. And I'm willing to bet that's true.

When I said that I wouldn't be able to live with it, I didn't mean in the physical sense....
It was more like, I wouldn't live with that false reality, and would actively correct the misunderstanding....
So, I wouldn't live with it, not passively anyway....

Beating yourself up in the mental plane for doing something against your own set of rules could be bad for your health,
and even possibly leading to death, but that was not the route I was intending with my post....

Has nothing to do with that. A player knows when his racquet ticks the ball. I play very little tennis, but have some 20,000 games of racquetball under my belt so I know that of which I write.

There is a difference between legal and ethical. Gonzalez did nothing illegal, but was certainly not ethical.

OJ was found not guilty, but that did not make him innocent.

The Warrior's Code is not in any book. It is a way of living to your own highest standard.

First of all who does this?:rofl2: Second of all what does this have to do with being a warrior?

Warrior's code. It's the code of honor no?

As in, honoring the rules of the game? Technically, the guy lost the point, but was too much of a douchebag to admit it. Winning (keeping the ego "alive") was more important than the spirit of honoring the rules that were agreed to.

I don't think there is anything in the rules of that particular game
that states that a player must correct the judge's decision.

If that is the case, then Gates's complaints about Gonzalez's behavior, after
the match has been decided seem to me less than honorable,
as Gonzalez abided by the rules of the game he agreed to play.

Maybe Gonzalez considers winning within the rules to be his own highest standard.

The litmus test for that is fairly simple. When asked about the hit, Gonzalez lied. He did not reply, "It was the umpire's call and I stand by that."

Instead he said, "I don't know if it touched my racquet or not." This is not possible. A pro can tell the tension on his strings within 1 or 2 pounds - that is how sensitive they are.

His denial tells us all we need to know of his character and the fact that he knew he was wrong.

An umpire is there to judge a close call, not as something to hide behind.

A different Gonzalez (Ruben) in racquetball was twice voted as 'Sportsman of the Year'. In one major tournament, he skipped a ball (a fault when the ball hits the floor before the front wall) and was erroneously awarded the match.

The referee is some 45-50 feet away and must judge where the ball hits within perhaps a 1/16th of an inch, but the player knows. Gonzalez told the ref that the ball skipped without any hesitation and went on to lose the match.

When later interviewed, Ruben unequivocally stated, "How can I claim a victory on a shot that I did not make? That is not racquetball."

Karma? At age 56 Gonzalez is still in the top 50 players in the world! Naturally, he has a huge fan base among racquetball sports fans.

No problem. Warriors code = sportsmanship right?

Seems like they could have some high speed cameras with real time computer analysis. Surely that stuff exists by now, right? Perhaps the games shouldn't have room for sportsmanship to matter?

What's honor have to do with war?
