wow 2 major drug busts down the street from me by DEA/police

A trio of Tanner brothers was allegedly hauling 2,500 pounds of Mexican marijuana a month into North Alabama and dispersing it throughout the Southeast, Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said.

A three-year investigation by local and federal authorities resulted in the brothers’ arrest a week ago and the confiscation of 1,800 pounds of dope, vehicles and more than $600,000 in cash.

The brothers hid their proceeds by laundering the money through real estate acquisitions and expensive automobile transactions, Blakely said.

They also used intimidation to keep their enterprise a secret, the sheriff said. Their intimidation tactics included threats, assaults and fire-bombing automobiles. “They did a fire-bombing here in Limestone County on a cohort they thought stole some dope from them,” Blakely said. “He wasn’t in the car, but it was parked outside his home.”

Blakely said the Limestone-Athens Drug Unit began investigating three years ago after getting complaints from citizens of drug activity. When investigators learned a year ago that the drugs were going to neighboring counties and other states, they contacted the U.S. attorney and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

2nd bust

Limestone narcotics officers began a surveillance of Benford's residence and routes nearby. He was discovered driving near his residence, and following the vehicle stop, officers obtained a search warrant for his residence.



As a result of the search warrant, officers seized a quantity of drugs including marijuana, pharmaceuticals, and Ecstasy tablets, along with $294,000.00 in cash. In addition, ATF seized seven handguns and will likely add more weapons charges due to Benford being prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm as a result of previous convictions.



The investigation is ongoing and now involves the potential seizure and asset forfeiture of real property as well as numerous luxury and sport vehicles valued at several hundred thousand dollars.



Benford remains in the Huntsville jail in lieu of bonds totaling 3 million dollars.

oh, and of the $618,000 confiscated from the marijuana bust, only $500,000 was put into evidence. no one knows what happen to the missing $118,000

no shit? i grew up in decatur. moved to athens.  this is usually a pretty calm city, good place for dealers like that to hide at i guess. after the bust it has been hard to find any regular bud, and there has been a over flow of dank into the area.

three years to investigate? sounds like a really long time to investigate that much stuff.

i think they would have been better off not fighting rivals, thats how most marijuana traffickers get away with it

our head county sheriff has been under investigation by the DEA for like 7 years now for controlling marijuana and cocaine trafficking from mexico to here. they just don't have any hard evidence to lay it on him

Yea a close friend of mine has smoked with the chief of police before, crazy stuff. I only lived there for about 8 months... my time in hell before I moved.

Could never find dank there, just ok middies... e/coke/pills/speed whatever you were into, unfortunately there was a drought so all those nice cow fields never gave me anything.
