ring the bed with salt.

I also use the water that collects in my outdoor ashtrays to spread around, helps with the fire ants.

there is several things what will work.

I'd put a ring of pennies around your outdoor bed...

slugs and snails don't like crossing over the top of copper for some reason.

You can use a 2" strip of copper flashing.  Normaly you can find it in a hardware store.  Apparently slugs and snails get a ZAP when they try to cross it.  Who knew?  Just line the out side of you plot with the stuff.

Halite (rock salt) if you can find it...ring that around. The crystals will last longer than regular salt.

Didn't know about the copper - good to know just for my general garden (which is getting ravaged by slugs - and the organic 'slug bait' isnt doing jack...)

Thanks!!

Right - I use the iron phosphate 'candy'. Problem is the sprinkles of iron phosphate tend to break down quickly, esp. in the rain. And we've had a lot of rain lately.

I like the copper idea & have a bunch from some recent roof work. Gonna finally get my garden slug free!

Sorry it's so OT, but sounds like it would work great for your patch too!

Pellet gun keeps them out of my patch. If you dont like the taste of squirrel you can use a paintball gun but they'll just come back.

Solar salt in a circle. Solar salt is used in water filtration systems.
I use it instead of roock salt and it last longer.(NOTE: buy the solar salt for de-icing instead of the rock salt, it's cheaper and no one seams to know this little secert when rock salt is sold out.)
You find solar salt in water filter section at the hardware store.

Copper, peices of old water pipe work well.
If you grow in pots, Then buy copper tape. Sold at a garden center.

Now for the tree rats, here is what I use!!
