Best slug killing strategy

I've just been stabbing them to death at night and tossing them out of my garden. Is this an effective strategy compared to salt/beer traps?

I cut them in half when I see them at the greenhouse, but we could never get rid of them in a place that big (a couple football fields of houses, let alone the garden and evergreen areas) so it's just kind of kill them when you see them. If it's a big problem quite a few people here say to use copper wire, tubing, or flashing to line your patch with. Apparently slugs hate it and wont cross it.

Yeah, when I had a garden I would go on a slug patrol every morning and night. Just split them in half with the shovel. Especially the black ones, which are invasive here. I don't like baits, especially after my dog got into a box of it once.

If it's not a ridiculously large area, they won't slime their way over a stripe of petroleum jelly, and you won't have to worry about killin' the little guys.

when I grew my garden this year (pots on concrete) I didn't want to kill the slugs/ snails (bit of a hippy I guess) but didn't want them eating my seedlings

So I hammered 5" nails through planks of wood in the corners, then placed cleaned (with wire wool) cooper tubing around the nails to create feet. so the slugs would have to climb over the copper to get to the table, to get to the plants

i have to say it worked a treat! You do have to clean the copper every so often (1-2 months depending on the air/ amount of rain etc) as they corrode and the bastards seem happier to slither across that

I dunno what your set up is, but I hope that helps :smile:
