Uh oh.
    #8734031 -

Ive lurked here for a while. Ive tried cakes and had moderate success. But im doing a pure verm. casing that seems to have dried out. it pulled away from the sides and is doing absolutely nothing.

I figured out the problem. There was a draft in the chamber that allowed the ver, to dry out. Ive been misting daily to try to keep things moist and battle the dry.

Is a dried out casing a lost cause?

Dunk them once or twice. If you still have failure, its probably dead.

How long does it normally take from when you first initiate fruiting in a casing

Usually after dumping grain into a tray, putting a casing layer and foil over it, i check it up on the 3rd day and patch. After patching put in the FC, about 2-3 days pins come up and the cycle continues.  I usually use jiffy mix or hand made 50/50 peat/verm because I'm a noob and can tell what dried out peat looks like. It's a little harder to know what dry verm looks like (kinda shiny) unless you've done it lots before. You can set some field capacity verm next to slight moist and next to completely dry for a visual guage.

that is its purpose.. right on...

true... and that is why the preparation of it comes in handy.. this is what i do..

Fill the vermiculite in a bowl with water and mix around for a minute.. just to make sure it soaks up water.. then strain it or pour the water out of the bowl till there is no standing water.. then lay it on your sub and make it even... a nice draft will for sure help to dry it out, though.. lol.. it takes some practice to know when to mist it, if at all...

My martha takes about 6-8 days from nothing to full flush... it really depends on strain and conditions... My old tubs used to take about 10 days to mature with the same isolate... probably cause im using more light now? I dont know.. that had always been my guess..

^^^^ read that.. it will greatly improve your yields when using a casing layer..

Okay, so I fixed the hole, which required a bit of movement of the mycelium. Because of this, I covored everything back up and am hoping they survive. The fungus seemed to be moist and healthy still, so maybe the draft patch will help.

Wish them luck!

ps. this is my last try for casing. If it fails, im probably not going to try growing mushrooms anymore. I spent way too much on this setup to have everything go to crap. Its kind of hurting my feelings.

if you give up, THEN it will be a waste.. its very easy to do, you are just new at it, and not good yet.. just keep practicing.. why quit when you have come this far? everyone sucks when they first do something.. thats why you practice...

Dude....don't give up...have some faith!!!;) I can relate to having some problems along the way. When all fails give it another go! It took me some time and research to get things right, and eventually it will work itself out! Give it another go and Good luck!!:mushroom2:

Its not just a few problems. It is having put out almost 3 bills and all i have gotten from it so far is 10 wet grams. That was on a cake, of course, but this project was way more expensive, and I followed my tek. The hole in the lid wasnt even that big, but the loose verm on top of the casing was bone dry. I couldnt keep it moist. Still cant. If I blew this project, its going to take me a while before I feel like spending money on a project that will likely fail.

The thing that sucks is that im not really new at this. Even if I was, my yield to cash output ratio is getting to be re-friggin-diculous.

Seriously. If I dont at least get 50 wet grams from these casings, then it just wont be worth it to try again. It'd be cheaper just to buy.

yes it will, if you do it RIGHT.. you are doing something wrong, and you are giving up before you even troubleshoot it.. What did you grow on? hopefully not JUST verm.. did you case the cakes? coir?

you need to tell us step by step what you did, and we will tell you what you need to correct...

Its probably FUBAR. Im not giving up, im just exhausted mentally from fighting with this every step of the way.

I used golden teacher spore syringe in a wheat grain spawn bag. Fully colonized, I crumbled and put into an aquarium, built as an all-in-one chamber. Beneath it, I put about 1/2 inch of moist verm (moist, when crushed, gave a few drops). I kept it covored and dark to allow for the mycelium to get a good grip. Two days later I checked in, patched with some extra verm, and left it alone again.

A couple days later, it looked like the fungus had overtaken just beneath the surface, so I traded out the dark covoring for a glass lid i made with an air filter patch about 3 inches cubic.

Ive been misting daily, about twice a day. I noticed the excessive dryness about 4 days ago. Turns out the sealent for the back wall didnt like the vermiculite (I think) because it left the left corner open, allowing heavy air exhchange.

I have fixed this by sealing that corner with external sealant (duct tape!), and putting some new, moist and sterilized, moist verm as a patch and covoring up some of the dryest spots, and the sides where the mycelium pulled away from the sides.

The fix came today. So now im just praying they arent toast.

I know, I probably messed up a lot. Granted, this is the first time casing.. sigh.

next time, use those bags to spawn to coir.. its VERY easy to prepare and VERY cheap, and you dont have to use as much grain..

you could probably fill up your chamber with a brick or 2 of coir, the dump your colonized grain in, and let it colonize that in the dark.. you will get great results, with less money spent on bags of grain..

put the brick in a 5 gallon bucket.. boil 1 gallon of water.. dump that water over the brick in the bucket.. cover and let cool.. THATS IT.. just squeeze the excess water out of the coir when you put it in the aquarium, and you are gold.. again... its cheap, and easy to prepare, and will give you better results than just fruiting off the grain itself.. especially if you case it right

Well, I do have 2 other bags working on filling up with myc. One is my last bit of golden teacher spores I had, another is p. cyanescence (sp?).

Hopefully, the bag of cyan will be fully done when the weather cools, then im going to attempt to make a pesudo-outdoor. HUGE pot with all natural goodies in it.

I may use your coir idea for the golden teacher bag i have left.

But for now..Im really just worried about these babes i have growing now. Id really hate to not even get one flush from them..

:frown:

if not, dunk it, recase it, and introduce pinning conditions again...

I was debating that. Are you suggesting i take the case, crumble the whole thing and recase it like it was direct from bag?

no.. a casing ONLY refers to the layer on top.. NOT the whole thing.. many people use this misnomer, and it is very confusing..

casing is putting a casing layer on top of your substrate.. what I mean, is take off your casing, dunk the substrate, drain, and put a fresh layer of casing on.. then let it run through the casing a bit, and fruit..

search for "bulk dunk"

There really isnt a whole lot of loose verm. on the casing anymore. The mycellium has grabbed a whole lot of it.

then take a sterile fork, and scrape it across the top to loosen it up, then dump it.. a colonized casing layer is useless.. then dunk it, and put more casing on there...

how are you preparing your vermiculite casing?
