It's been a long time since I used Gen Chem I stuff, but I'll take a stab at it. No guarantees that I'm right though

@ Identify the oxidation number of the underlined element.

Cl2O    I had -2 I had the same question in my book when I went to review, it says +1
Cl2O7  I had -2 I think it's +7
Mn2O3    I had 4 I think it's +3
MnO4(with a -2 charge)  I had 2 +6

@ Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent for the reaction shown.

Fe + Cl2 >>> Fe(with a +3 charge) + Cl -

I had Fe for the oxidizing agent and Cl for the reducing agent Yep

@ What changes in oxidation state occur in this reaction?

4Fe(OH)2 + O2 >>> 2H2O + 2Fe2O3 . H2O I think they're asking you to label the oxidation state for all atoms in the reaction

I'm not sure what their even asking here. Still new to this stuff.

@ What is oxidized?

Still, no clue... Fe, I believe. The (OH)2 kinda throws me off though. Forgot what to do about parenthesis. The way I interpret it is Fe(OH)2 is an ionic compound. OH has a charge of -1, so 2x-1= -2, so Fe is + 2, you take it from there.

@ The following experimental observations are made:

FE + 2Ag(+) >>> Fe(2+) + 2Ag
Mg + Fe(2+) >>> Mg(2+) + Fe

@ Rank the metals as reducing agents.

I had Mg as the strongest, then Fe with Ag as the weakest Seems right, not 100% on that though

@ Rank the metal ions as Oxidizing agents.

I had Ag as the strongest, then Fe with Mg as the weakest. Seems right, not 100% on that though

Also, here is a set of rules from my book used to determine oxidation states:

Quote:
1. The oxidation state(OS) of an individual atom in a free element (uncombined with other elements) is 0.

Ex: OS of isolated Cl atom is 0; the two Cl atoms in the molecule Cl2 both have an OS of 0.

Quote:
2. The total OS of all the atoms in:
(a) neutral species, such as isolated atoms, molecules, and formula units is 0.

Ex: The sum of the OS of all the atoms in CH3OH and all of the ions in MgCl2 is 0

(b) an ion is equal to the charge on the ion

Ex: the OS of Fe in Fe3+ is +3. The sum of the OS of all atoms in MnO4 is -1

Quote:
3. In their compounds, the group 1 metals have an OS of +1 and the group 2 metals have an OS of +2.

Ex: The OS of K is +1 in KCl and K2CO3; the OS of MG is +2 in MgBr2 and Mg(NO3)2

Quote:
4. In it's compounds, the OS of fluorine is -1.

Ex: The OS of F is -1 in HF, ClF3, and SF6

Quote:
5. In it's compounds, hydrogen has an OS of +1.

Ex: the OS of H is +1 in HI, H2S, NH3, and CH4

Quote:
6. In it's compounds, oxygen has an OS of -2.

Ex: The OS of O is -2 in H2O, CO2, and KMnO4

Quote:
7. In binary (two-element) compounds with metals:
Group 17 (7a) elements have OS of -1
Group 16 (6a) elements have OS of -2
Group 15 (5a) elements have OS of -3

Ex: THe OS of Br is -1 in MgBr2; The OS of S is -2 in Li2S and the OS of N is -3 in Li3N

Note: If whenever two rules contradict each other, go with the higher numbered rule.

I hope that helps, I remember what a bitch it was for me to understand oxidation at first.
