Chemistry Homework Help, Pleeaaase?
    #7152581 -

Hey Pub,

I have some chemistry homework in my Fundamental Chemistry class.  I needs some help writing out and balancing some equations.  Anyone willing to help? :smile:

Alright, first

3. Complete and balance equations for these single-replacement reactions. If a reaction
should not occur, write “no reaction” after the arrow.

a. 2Al + 2HNO3 -->
b. 2Ag + 2HNO3 -->
c. 2Pb + 2CuCl -->
d. H2SO4 + Au -->
e. Zn + Ni(NO3)2 -->

I think I got the first to right. I did these by assuming there will be two H atoms in the end reaction then balancing. But I don't even know why there's supposed to be two H's.

But then questions C and E don't even involve H, so I am not sure what to do with those.

a. 2Al + 2HNO3 --> 2AlNO3 + H2
b. 2Ag + 2HNO3 --> 2AgNO3 + H2
c. 2Pb + 2CuCl --> 2PbCu + Cl2
d. H2SO4 + Au -->
e. Zn + Ni(NO3)2 -->

I used to be able to do this with ease but now I can't remember which metals react with what. I'm pretty sure D is no reaction because I don't think gold reacts with any acid, e reacts I think, but I forget how.

gold is very unreactive; hence why its so valuable :grin:

Other than that these are all substitution reactions.. Whether Lead actually displaces copper IRL; I'm not sure.. (I'd need to look at the reactivity) but thats probably the answer that they're looking for.

edit: okay, I see, but how does one figure out what substitutes what?

metals react with non-metals...

the organic part is the bit that swaps..

On a fundamental level anyways... there is so so so much more to it than that..

Metals tend to be a cation (positive) and non-metals an anion (negative).. And as opposites attract. Yeah?

As all of the examples above are Ionicly bonded; the non-metal part (the anion) is the bit that swaps over as the original material is being replaced by a more reactive metal..

For example...
2Pb(aq) + 2CuCl(aq) --> 2Pb+(aq) + 2Cu+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) --> 2PbCl(aq) + 2Cu+(aq)

Its difficult to explain without getting too involved...
