Don't Believe We Have to Rely on Foriegn Oil
    #8704242 -

I am by no means an expert on this issue. I made a service call to an Old Timer here out in the Country today. After I finished the repair, we sat down and had a cup of coffee. That cup of coffee turned into one and a half pots, lunch, and a lengthy conversation on the state of local oil production spanning 30 years. I learned more in those few hours than I have in a long time about one subject. I think I understood everything he said. Here it goes.

A new oil formation was discovered running along the Missouri River Basin. Stretching from south-eastern SD to Canada on the eastern run, and stretching from northeast Wyoming, through Montana and North Dakota all the way into Canada on the western side. Many of the wells on the North Slope of the Gellar Formation are capable of producing 20,000 barrels A DAY. Current wells drilled into this formation are limited to a production of 10 or less barrels a day. This is due to lack of transportation and refining facilities. Over the past thirty years govt lobbys and Big Oil ensured the demise of local scale refining operations. The Powder River Basin of Wyoming, which produces some of the nations coal, natural gas, methane, and oil, possesed many refineries back in the seventies. Now a Kerosene plant in Newcastle (escaped closure due to its proximity to an airbase operating Strategic Bomber Wings) a Diesel Refinery in Montana that supplies fuel to the Coal Mines, and a small Fuel Refinery in Casper are all that remain. Now if all these refineries had remained in place and operating at capacity, this country would not be in such bad shape.

It is an early estimate that this formation may contain more oil than is currently left in ALL of the Mid-East Oil Fields. The main concern is this formations unusual shape. It maintains a thickness of about 25 feet "just below" the surface. However it is speculated that this formation has many "fingers" and "undulations" traveling well below the main formation.

The best part being this oil is of a very high grade. Meaning local refining operations would only need to be minimal. Releasing cheap, quality fuel into a local economy based on Energy Production. Do you really think Shell will stand for this. The have already filed papers with a local Montana County Court to have the building of a new refinery there blocked. Thankfully the City Council where it is to be built is on-board and will handle it accordingly. And in North Dakota, Native Americans may have a way to finally get back at greedy whites. A large portion of the Gellar runs thru a reservation by Mandan.

Hopefully, the right people will realize what a strangle-hold big oil has on this country and help subsidize the cost of building local refining operations. The oil fields of Texas and Alaska and to some extent California have one major advantage. Coastline. Which is where the major refineries are. Which are owned by international interests. Which are interested in international oil importation. If we could think a little more locally we could get out of this thing. Plus theres also the massive shale field in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

I did business with a man that was an 'oil prospector', he
showed me maps and charts displaying oil and gas discoveries,
natural resources and the like,  this country has a great deal
more oil than is let on

Hell ya, store it in massive tanks and bottle the nasty fart gasses comin out. I've already got a brand name "Stool Fuel, Using the Stank to Fill the Tank"

Are you kidding me?  This is all bullshit.

Seriously;  There is 'some' oil in ND, SD, and MT, but none of it amounts to the vast reserves in the middle east.  Sure, there are oil shales, around, but they are hardly viable, as of now.  There really isn't any reason to refute this claim point by point.  It is blatently false.

Ask me specific questions, if you wish.

How do you come by your information. I live in fossil fuel country. I speak to many people working various jobs in the Oil and Natural Gas Industry. Its my thing to stike up conversation with folks while I'm doing my job in thier home. It is an undeniable fact that there are massive reserves in this area. Like I said, the Discoveries on this Formation are VERY new.

The fact is that we should not have to rely on oil at all. NASA's budget this year is 17 BILLION. You mean to tell me we just can't put the space program on hold for a year and maaaaaybe put all them fucking smart people and money into  doing something like ohhhh I don't know. AN ALTERNATIVE  FUEL SOURCE?

I agree with you totally. However our infrastucture is geared in such a way that employing new alternative fuels into said infrastucture would be in my opinion, very expensive and unreliable. I think we should improve the domestic situation so we can invest money spent on oil into our own economy instead of OPEC's. The domestic oil profits could be used to fund alt energy projects. The Coal mines here could NOT run on any renewable source now or in the next ten years. Remember, most mining shovels run on electricity, so they need lots of juice.

If this was the case, why wouldn't this be making bigger news than all this talk about drilling off our coasts which from my understanding only contain about 300 days worth of oil and would take years to see anything come of(please correct me if I'm wrong).

What surprised me the most was that Canada is sitting on the second largest supply of crude oil in the world behind Saudi Arabia. Oil production should absolutely explode in the next few decades around here.

Because big oil is on the coasts. Thats where all the political interest is at. You may recall a blurb on the News a few days ago about residents in North Dakota being made very rich by initial oil land leases. Big Oil killed the Refining Industry here years ago, now they dont want it coming back.

"Western North Dakota has large oil reserves. By some estimates, it has more oil than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A federal government geologist estimated a formation called the Bakken shale holds 400 billion barrels of oil."

Pulled just now off google

Where do I come by my information?  I understand the way of the world.

I like how you say fossil fuel country, yet I'm guessing you are from the midwest, somewhere.  Yes, you have coal.

and 'VERY' new.

Bullshit.  All of it.  I don't mean to be a prick, but let's talk about the laramide orogeny.  This was the latest, some will say.  They lie, too.

You cannot make oil unless there is a SIGNIFICANT carbon source that is encapsulated and preserved.  This is NOT the case in the midwest.

A few thoughts on the various posts I read:

Whenever you hear about vast deposits of oil being found keep in mind that we hear these sorts of things all the time and almost always nothing comes of it. The reason is hardly anyone factors in how much it costs to retrieve the oil and at what rate it can be pumped. It hardly does you any good if there are 100 trillions barrels of oil in a particular location if it costs as much to produce it than it would to sell it or if it can only be gotten out at the rate of a trickle a day.

You hear alot about the tar sands in Canada. It is low grade petroleum, very expensive to extract since you must burn through huge amounts of energy to pull it from the sediment and it is very environmentally destructive.

To the person who mentioned redeploying NASA's budget. First of all the NASA budget is peanuts. And secondly space exploration is an investment not an expense. We have retrieved every dime we put into it due to spinoff technologies.

But I agree with you that we should either fund a massive project like the Manhatten Project to find a new energy source or put up a prize like the X Prize which will go to the companies that help discover and produce those sources.

We cannot drill our way out of this particular problem.
