I love talk for talk's sake. It always leads to better discussion. You can't start out a conversation with specific things, because you might offend some one.

For instance... You can't just go up and ask some one how their dad is, because they might have passed away recently.

you would start out saying "hey, how are you?"
then move to...
"what area are you from?"
"what kind of place do you live in?"
"Do you live with your parents?"
if they say "yes, I live with my mom and my dad" then you can ask "how is your dad?"

Bad example that will most likely not happen often, but you get the idea.

I think this may vary depending on where we live, but ya, it seems to be the general case around here. Most people rather keep to themselves it seems. I have no problem interacting with random people, but i am not usually one to take the initiative since they typically don't bring anything new to the table. And besides, i enjoy silence. While some people just cant seem to find a way to start a chat, i am sure some don't want to be bothered- which i would want to respect.

We are all so very similar, I find waiting for the right people to come to me a much more efficient way of making friends.

See, that seems like bullshit to me.  I do it every day because its what people expect, but fuck, its like having OCD sometimes.  I mean, if you care how they are, then ask.  But if you just met em, you really just want to hear that they are OK, and not about their particular brand of fucked up.  So why lie and ask "How are you?" if you don't know the person?  Why not just say, "Hi, I hope you're doing well today."  If that is in fact what you hope.

Also, just a sort of sub-thread, does anyone find it easier to open up to people you just met? I find it rather easy to open up to strangers for some reason...

It might be easy if they care enough to listen, but its not what i do/would want to do.

pair of headphones never goes in

I generally use my CD player (no mp3's for me) for the specific purpose of ignoring people. I'll be at the library, and without fail, if I am not listening to my CD player, someone starts talking to me. Hello- I'm  studying here! But of course you can't just say that.

I guess I'm a semi-popular person, people always are talking to me, and to be honest, I'm not all that chatty during the day when I'm working/going to class/writing/being productive. I'll talk for hours with people at a party or whatever.

Plus, I love music. Overall, I don't have much trouble with it. I can say though that in a place like the mall, or the bowling alley, I don't get why people walk around with headphones in. Places like that are going to have a degree of social interaction whether you're there to just shop, or practice your follow through, or not...

I'm just confused since you first said you only use it in your car, but then you said you're joking. Then you confirm that you don't use headphones. So do you only use it at home in one of those ipod-stereo things or what?
