ipods, and loss of social interraction
    #8684183 -

It makes things really really awkward when people are walking with them on. I want to start conversations with people, or ask them where they are headed or general smalltalk from stranger to stranger to brighten up some one's day, but everyone listens to their mp3 players now. I can't start a conversation with some one that is in motion somewhere.

The most awkward thing happened to me yesterday while I was walking somewhere with my new hand-me-down ipod. I was walking, and there was a preist walking on the other side of the street. I had my headphones on, and took them off just as he stopped looking in my direction. He crossed the street and sped up to get ahead of me as to avoid awkward closeness while walking.

I wanted to talk to him and see where he was headed so we could talk because we seemed to be going in the same direction.

I only had headphones in because I was in a part of town where not a lot of people walk, so I wasn't expecting to see anyone.

But does this bother anyone else? Listening to music while riding a bike makes sense, because you are wizzing by people in the sidewalk/road, but while walking it makes people lose a lot of opportunities. Nobody talks to each other.

When people are bored they turn to their ipod and play solitaire while listening to the newest album instead of making the situation more fun. It just bothers me...

I know it isn't unhealthy, and it's a choice that I can respect (I love music), but it gets to me.

I find it weird when I see mothers pushing strollers and listening to their iPods...sure they can't "have a conversation with" their babies/children, but I mean...really?

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

When I am walking somewhere I have no intention to get into conversations. I have intentions of getting to where I want to be.

That is very true. But nothing is more awkward than when you are passing some one up while they are listening to their ipod. You just kind of have to avert your eyes lest you create awkward eye contact. I'm sure everyone has experienced it a number of times.

Edit: and I don't intend on stopping people and talking to them, I intend on asking 'where are you headed? I'm going that way, lets walk together'.

Life is all about the people you know. I bet you anything that you have passed some one up that could have helped you with something that you didn't get to know because you wanted to listen to music.

I agree with you, but its also why I listen to my mp3 player so much.  Its a polite way of saying "I'm not interested in interacting with you" and I get pretty annoyed when someone doesn't take the hint.

it depends on the day whether I want to interact with strangers or not, but it does suck that we have all this technology built to help separate us from human contact

I consider listening to your ipod in public to be a rejection of reality. I hardly ever do it. I like to hear what goes on around me. (Not that I own an ipod, a cheapass 2GB mp3 player is good enough for me)

I understand where you're coming from, but it doest bother me personally. I'm not big on bs talk to pass the time. And besides, i don't see strangers coming up and just talking to people out of the blue too often anyways, it'd probably be nice for this to chance but i don't think lack of ipods would have anything to do with it.

I don't blame ipods, I blame people closing themselves off from conversation with them. Just as me not doing much today so far has to do with me being on the computer. It isn't the computer's fault.

Do you mean that people generally don't want to interract with each other in the first place? Tell me you don't enjoy it when some one you don't know smiles at you and says 'hey!' in an actually genuine tone.

I doubt that.  If some random person comes up to me and asks where I am headed I would  be pretty weirded out.

MP3 players are heavenly gifts when it comes to ignoring petitioners.  My campus is completely overrun by them but they will not stop you if you have earphones in...

Some people  don't want to talk to random people. Not everyone is as outgoing as  you and you should respect that.

Bottom line, why do you care that people enjoy listening to music while walking? I'd rather hear music than the sound of construction and cars.

Drok- There have always been reclusive people.

I don't care that they do it, they have every right to. I just wish people would open up more. That's what is bothering me.

I do respect reclusive people, I go through reclusive phases all the time where I don't talk to people except for my close friends. I even close my close friends off sometimes.

I am completely understanding of it, it just seems that the frequency of these kinds of people has been increasing. And I don't think every person listening to an ipod or mp3 player walking by is reclusive. If that were the case my entire community would be made of recluses.

I think talk for talk's sake is far worse than no interaction in the first place.  People today just completely bypass the 'think first' filter these days and spew their verbal scat all over my eardrums.  Note to world: If you have run out of things to say, shut the fuck up.
