Work out question.. Uneven muscle sizes.
    #8681818 -

I just got back to working out for the first time in... 2 years or so.

I've noticed that a lot of muscles on the right side (dominant side) of my body are bigger than than the left side.

I'm wondering how I can get them back to being symmetrical. It's mainly the muscles in my arms- biceps and triceps. My traps are also smaller on my left side.

I was wondering if I need to do extra reps/sets on the left side. Or, if I use a bar that works both sides, like a curl bar, will left side would rebound and pick up the work since the right side is used to that kind of work?

How do I fix this? Having different sized traps looks really weird now that I look at it.

inject steroids on the left side. j/k

mabey you need to lift more then they will start to become even.  Its too early to tell.

You think my idea of working each side with the same amount of weight will work to get the left side back up to par?

its gotta, eventually they will even out.  I work out alot and my left sided muscles are a little bigger than the right, and I'm right handed.

Christ man, going to the gym for the first time in... seriously... 7 years, is rough.

I've never been big into working out. But in high school I had to. I also had been playing soccer for 8 years at that point.

Now, I haven't played soccer in about 4 years now. I tried the leg press at the gym... I could do 500lbs. That is shit. Sophomore year in HS my max on leg press was 1100lbs. Now, its at 500lbs.

It's amazing how much muscles deteriorate over years of not working out.

Being perfectly symmetrical is impossible.  It just ain't gonna happen.  But if one side is clearly weaker and dwindled in mass compare to the other, your best bet is to continue to work out evenly.  Don't try to do weird things and increase weights just for one side of your body.  Keep the weights even, and increase them both at the same rate.

It's all genetics.

You have to do extra sets with your left side.  Even if you do the same amount, your left side will never be as good because your form is always going to be significantly better on your dominant side.  You can't make it perfect, but extra left-side exercises will make it better.

Bingo! Muscle is relative to the work it does. Do the same weights get the same size.

Everyone is always a littler bigger on one side, whatever side is their dominant side is.

I noticed the same thing when I first started weightlifting but now the two sides have pretty much evened out.

Use your weaker side as the yard stick each time you train. If you're using barbells, this will work itself out and eventually the difference between the two sides will be close to nonexistent. It is important here to put your mind into your left side and let it determine progress. I mean really emphasize your left side being the boss for your workouts.. You'll be surprised how fast it comes around if you do it right.

Using dumbbells - do exactly the same number of reps, but after you finish a set with your 'strong' side go straight back to your 'weaker' side with little to no rest.. this will bring it up to par in no time as it will be getting worked harder than the other while maintaining the 'strong' side.

Don't do extra reps/sets for your weak side.. That will only lead you further away from the symmetrical look you're after.

you want to use dumbells more than barbells and exercises that allow your dominant side to pick up the slack.  benching or curling dumbells in place of a singular bar allows your weaker side to work harder and catch up to the dominant side.

If you don't want to do extra work on the left side, pay very close attention to your form.  If you are not controlling the weight with your left side as well as you do with your dominant side, you will not get as good a workout on that side and the asymmetry will persist.  It is really difficult to have the same level of control with your weak side.  Almost everyone has some degree of asymmetry for this reason.

Also, in your day to day life you are always going to favor the dominant side.  The muscles will always get more work.  Whenever you only need one arm to do something, which one do you think you are going to choose?

I always use my off arm to do stuff like that, to reduce asymmetry.  Also, when I'm lifting I use my left arm to carry all the weights, or when I'm carrying two weights I put the heaviest one in my left hand.
