That pretty much sums it up for me as well. I can't try and defend the American Apparel asthetic because it is creepy...most of the shots depict girls who look young in objectifying and prone positions. But also if I am being honest I find the whole thing titillating. The girls look young, but not underage, and more importantly they pick models who have a very fine blend of amateurish naturalness mixed with a sort of art school self-concious sense of style. In other words, they don't look like cookie cutter porn actresses or super models, and yet they are strikingly made up and stylized. I feel a weird sort of shame looking at them and being turned on by them, but that is part of the allure. These are the type of women, in their physical prime, that everyone resents for being so foxy and hip and so unbelievably confidant and aware of how hot they are. They seem like they would be too pretentious to give you the time of day. In this insane culture of hipness and hierarchy it is simultaneously infuriating and alluring. I'd like to think that I am obdurate enough to ignore the seductiveness at play in AA's photo shoots, but honestly, I'm not. I find these images 1000x times more exciting than any hardcore pornography.
