Hitchhiking 101 Help!
    #8638809 -

Ok, because I do not feel like paying 170 for stupid amtrak from eugene to LA, or paying 40 for amtrak to portland and a flight to minneapolis then LA, I have decided to hitchhike along the coast. This is my first time hitchhiking, and I think it should add a little variety to my summer experience!

Does anyone have any advice whose ever done it? My parents think I'm crazy and are offering to pay for whatever transportation imaginable but they don't understand that I'm doing it for the experience, I still have plenty of money of my own.

I heard its beautiful along the coast and this would also give me time to stop in the Redwoods and overnight it if I wish. I'll be trucking it with my 85 liter backpack and the plan is to just wait on the onramps with my thumbout/a sign saying where I'm headed.

Again, first time ever hitching but what could go wrong:shrug: I'm 6'1" and athletic, competent and confident, and I have no real deadlines to be anywhere anytime. It would be nice to get to LA/Glendale/Pasadena by Sunday so that I can chill with my boy on his days off. Wish me well on my adventure, I hit the road tomorrow!

Have fun dude and good luck.

I only wish I was able to be in your shoes right now!

My advice is to find those things that give pleasure and do them often without too much attachment and relax and wait for the show to end.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

Yo, I went on my own hitchiking adventure about 500 miles, and even though sites say you can go X miles in a day, MAKE SURE you have wiggle room in your schedule, at least a  few days. Getting across the country can definitely be done, but it WILL involve some long waits, and patience.

A good sign is key. I usually write the name of a town that's far enough away for me to cacth people on long hauls, but close enough for people commuting within the area. 30 miles is good, unless you don't want to bother making a new sign.

The reason I say this is because, if you get caught in a crazy ride (I've been picked up by some real doozies), they don't know you're going all the way to Timbuktu. You can just wait thirty minutes, and you can get out and try and get a better ride.

Also, when someone drops you off, MAKE SURE it's a good spot to catch another ride from. Good luck!

I just gave a ride to a lady today with her thumb up...people still pick people up. you shouldn't have a problem.

simple rules of thumb (for me anyway) = don't fall asleep in somebody's car, seriously.  Don't accept anything from them as far as drink and food go. Do have your blade in your front pocket. (may be a bit paranoid but, eh, I'm not about to fully trust random heads)

:tongue2:Thanks guys for the advice and encouragement, I'm really pumped. I'm gonna catch 126 west to the coast to 101, I figure a sign saying to 101 should work until I get there. Then I'll just be heading South on 101, mosying along.

I'm only bringing a little bit of pot, I might score some more before I head out but I don't want to be all stoned out and hitchhiking, better to have my wits about me I figure. No weapons for me, I'm not about that energy; I'm no pushover either though and I don't fuck around, so I'm not worried about that aspect of it.

It really is exciting to be diving off into the unknown. The people I've met on my journey West so far have already interested me greatly and there were some really special faces, I am tittilated by the idea of meeting more:tongue2:

I hitchhiked down 101 last month and there's no way you'll make it by Sunday going down 101.

You could EASILY pull it off by sticking to the Interstate (5), but as mindblowingly incredible the coast is, it's very slow going.

On 101 it's easy to get rides, they're just very short rides, usually locals from one town to the next. Got smoked out the whole way down. And of course you'll get lost in the beauty and WANT to take your time.

Stop in  Arcata.

The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here." - Richard Dawkins

Man, even on a website of fellows who love to talk about their own recreation of drug use, interests, etc. there's still a lot of close-minded fucks who know nothing about what they criticize.
