How burnt is this, think i'll get murdered?? it's a lot of banjo country in washington/oregon if ya know what i mean....
It's either that, or $700+ for a last minute plane ticket to get to the tiny airport that serves my county.

Hitched from a regional in Montana to some where in Idaho. That was out in the middle of nowhere. Did get one lady who bought us dinner (I think she wanted a 3 way).
Never know what you'll find in America's highways.

Some people have good luck with it. The one time I hitched, I had someone let me ride in the bed of their truck to the gas station. I turned down the wrong road and ran out of gas. I almost walked all the way to the gas station before the guy picked me up though.
I don't know what you mean. I would feel safer with a hillbilly than a city person.

I've hitchhiked in WA, but not in that region...
The only issue that I've heard about hitching out there, are the tight roads in Oregon with little shoulder.
Hitchhiking is safe if you know what you're about, and you're in one of the tamest regions in the history of civilization (WA/OR), you're practically in Canada.
Personally, I would rather bus or rideshare. The latter being easy to find btw. That's my conclusion after hitchhiking 3 times over the past decade.

Ask John Rambo what happens when you try hitch hiking in Oregon.

Haha lets just hope i don't get harassed by any cops then i might have to go rambo haha
also thanks for the replies anyone i feel alot safer knowing people on here have hitched that far. Also i think what Loph said makes alot of sense, city people are probably a lot more dangerous that country people. Just i've never hitched before and you always hear sensationalized horror stories haha. Thanks again everyone and best wishes!! Time for an adventure!

I've never hitchiked as far as you're aiming for, its always been within a 100 mile range
If you have to camp out around the Lost Coast (north Cal) bear bag your food man
Good luck

I've done that trip. Between olympia and portland is rough, we were stuck outside of Vancouver for 24+hours. That being said, I was with a group of 4 and we still got a ride eventually. Also when people see you at the same spot the next day they start to feel bad and throw money and food at you. As long as you're willing to wait it out you'll make it eventually. I would try to get a ride all the way from olympia to Portland if possible.
Another time we took like 6 different transit buses from somewhere near Chehalis all the way to Astoria for like, $3.00 total, then hopped on the 101. If you're trying to get there fast 5 is the way to go, but if you're doing it for the journey, take 101. You'll meet Hella cool people, you can sleep on the beach all through oregon without getting hassled, and there are salal berries every morning for breakfast while you're waiting for a ride. Also it's easier/faster to get rides on 101, and the cars are going slower so it's not as sketch, and they have time to see your face.
Edit: I didn't mean to imply you should try to get dropped off or picked up IN a major city, don't do that! You'll end up having to take transit to get out of town. Trucks stops and gas stations on outskirts are good, in Oregon you have people that pump gas who might kick you out, so look for turn outs and on ramps there.
