woodlover advice

I am experiencing very slow colonization of some woodchips I have put down. I don't know the extent of the mycelium because I don't want to disturb the chips and growth too much.
(I collected and kept alive some mycelium from last years harvest and performed a variation of the woodlover tek.)

The woodchips are laying on moist, shady soil.
1. Should I cover them with some soil or leaf matter as a casing layer to retain moisture? or do they need plenty of oxygen?

June has been exceptionally dry and warm. They were watered several times and the soil has always been on the moist side, as have been the lower layer of chips. (but not the top)

Also, I am noticing slugs working working their way throughout the wood chips. I have put slug pellets down around the area, but I'm not sure whether to scatter them on the chips themselves. The product I am using contains 3% metaldehyde, but I'm not sure what the other constituents and binders are.
2. Is this safe for mycelium?

Finally, the type of chips I have decided to use seem to be mixed with coniferous sources. I have noticed the odd small pine cone here and there.
I chose these because I have seen hypholoma fasciculare, stropharia aeruginosa, stropharia aurantica(I think), a galerina sp., and another hypholoma sp.
I figured, It would be suitable for ps. cyanescens as well.
3.Bad choice?
4.Should I mix in some strictly hardwood chips? Or even work in some (alder) sawdust?

I have the feeling july will be pretty wet. Also, there is plenty of time between now and the fruiting season, so maybe I'll just be patient.

its seems like you pretty much know what your doing the chips and pine cones should be fine. i cant imagine alder hurting at this point. make sure it is in the shade and is moist not wet. i have read about some organic slug killer  that allot of people mix right into there patches. other then that all i have to say is be patient. you said the myc is from last year.. maybe it really isn't that viable anymore.

thanks for your response. It is in the shade, and moist. The mycelium has been steadily growing/kept alive all year. I think its fine. It is spreading somewhat after all.

I have to say, patience should pay off. come to think of it.

I just wonder what will do more damage. Slugs? or Slug killer?

I'm gonna add some alder, then report back in a few weeks. I hope to have some nice pictures when fruiting begins!
