Convection in FC?
    #8603782 -

Ok, everything has been going pretty well with my monotub so far. I've spawned B+ to WBS to Straw/Poo and cased 50/50. I cased on Saturday and nothing has shown through yet.

I'm going to have to move the tub out into my garage once fully colonized to fruit. I've read through many posts on temperature and how it effects fruiting but the reality is that I have no choice. I have to do it in my garage where the temperature get into the 90's during the day.

That said, I have an upright freezer in the garage that gets warm on the top. Could I put the tub on top of the freezer and use the heat generated inside of the tub to create convection for FAE?

If the temp in your garage is in the 90's and your going to put the tub on something that will add more heat. Your going to fail miserably. You will kill the poor myc. Re Research fruiting temperatures before proceeding further. If you created a decent mono tub as seen in the previous threads here at the shroomery. Your FAE shouldn't be that high of a concern, but it will not alleviate all needs to mist and fan.

what is the temp of the concrete floor in your garage?  if it were me, i'd prolly lay down a trash bag and set my tub on the floor, to conduct heat out of your substrate and help keep things cool

I don't think it would add more heat during the hot part of the day. It would just add more heat during cooler parts of the day.

I won't put it up there though. It originally struck me as a good spot because it was up high and my garage isn't exactly the cleanest room in my house. But maybe contams won't be as big an issue once the 50/50 is fully colonized?

I've researched fruiting temps quite a bit, but the problem with forums is that a lot of times you don't know who is right. I did see a post by RR saying that the temp of the fruiting chamber was the least influential fruiting signal.

It will add more heat - don't do it. The only way it could create convection is if the fridge causes the substrate to get hotter than the ambient temp. With the ambient temp already too high, you don't want to add to the problem.

Hot air rises, so in a hot garage, the coolest air is found near the bottom. Nonlinear's idea about using the concrete as a heat sink is brilliant. If you don't use that (maybe you floor gets hot too), put the tub on blocks so air can circulate underneath it. Substrate generates heat (especially a thick layer in something large like a tub) and elevating the tub can help the tub radiate the heat instead of letting it build. Still, I like Nonlinear's concrete idea better.

Some people say to use polyfill for holes, some say it doesn't matter. You're right that colonized material is contaminant resistant, but since you may be in a very contaminant rich environment, you probably want to go with polyfill.

Also, try to seal the edges where the lid meets the tub. There's a gap there that contams can enter - that's one of the reasons RR thinks polyfill is silly (he's also adamant about sterility in FC's being impossible and pointless to pursue).

When I want to seal the gap on one of those tubs (I was in a similar situation a little while ago) I find that you can create a sealing lid by laying the lid on a slightly bigger piece of plastic sheeting, folding the sheeting around the lid's edges, and taping the plastic to the top of the lid. You end up with a lid that has a flat piece of plastic on the bottom. If the tub has something to lock the lid down you can just use that, otherwise clamp the lid to the tub or put something a little heavy on there. The pressure pushing down on the lid will create a decent seal against the tub.

Temps in the 90's aren't a death sentence. Wild cubes are plentiful in Florida and temps there stay in the 90's for a good portion of the year. Just make sure you have plenty of FAE since that's a major pinning trigger and maintain your humidity. You may have to mist to make up for the extra evaporation from the heat, so have a good mister ready and consider taking the tub somewhere cleaner to open it if you're really worried about contams in the garage.

Thanks for all of your help! I didn't think about letting the concrete cool the tub, that's a good idea.

The holes are polyfilled and I'll find some way to get a better seal around the lid to prevent moisture loss and contams.

i would try and measure the floor temp first if you can, as you don't want it getting too cold.  try a thermocouple or thermometer between the tub and the floor and see what values you get.  anywhere in the '70s should work fine.

the nice thing about the concrete is that it should be fairly stable during the day and night.

In a monotub, the polyfil isn't really a contam barrier but more importantly a means for keeping moisture inside.

It won't host contaminants and it's difficult for them to migrate through them therefore it is a contam barrier. Why do you think people use polyfil as an injector port for spawn jars? It is a contam barrier that's why.

A contam barrier is the exact reason that its used with spawn jars. However, grain spawn and a bulk substrate monotub are two completely different things. I don't mean to say that the polyfil does not serve partial purpose as resisting contaminate spores in a monotub, but that it is not the primary purpose. Its main function, and a large part of why a monotub works, is to allow fresh air exchange without detrimental loss of humidity.
