Here is the original BRF paste tek that funkyballon posted a few months back. His original post showed how to use this paste for cloning. I figured if it works for cloning, it'll work for starting cultures from spore. All you do is make a paste using BRF and water. There are no offical measurements to create the paste. Just water and flour. I've found the perfect consistancy for the paste. You want the paste to be firm enough to hold a peak when a toothpick is puled from the paste. Then just fill each jar with 1/4" to 1/2" of this paste and pressure cook for 20 minutes. The pressure cooking will cause the paste to form a hard surface like agar. This is why the mycelium grows "on" the paste and not "in" it.

This paste idea works great. When a FOAF was making malt agar plates, he decide to also make paste plates to compare. He used ground bird seed from walmart(cheap wild bird seed). 1 cup of ground B.S. and 2 cups of water, also a tablespoon of honey, was boiled till it look like thick cream of wheat. Then was poured into Glad disposable dishes. Tops covered with allum. foil, then lid was pressed down snug over the foil. then pressure cooked. Later placed myceluim in agar plates and B.S. plates. When checked on 2 days later, Agar hasn't run yet, but the B.S. paste is kicking ass. I think this is his cheap agar replacement. If anyone has any grain around, make a paste and post about it.

Its been a week and the TC mycelium took over most of B.S. paste, and the mycelium is just now starting to spread on the agar. I used a small amount of H2O2 in the agar. Could this be reponsable for the slow growth?? There is no contam. on the agar, but 2 B.S. paste plates gained contam.s and had to be disposed of. Can H2O2 be added to B.S. paste to prevent contam. And, when would be the best time to add it the the B.S. paste??

I pressure cooked mine for 20min. If your only using BRF and water, its farily easy to sterilize. If your using crushed grains like birdseed etc...You would obviously want to pressure cooked a bit longer. The Lizard,
