What is the cause of my poor pinset?
    #8581854 -

Hello all, I have several successful grows under my belt. I recently changed residency and my new grow setup is in a basement instead of a closet.

I am using a Martha with a cool mist inside on the bottom shelf on a repeat cycle timer running 20 seconds on 13 minutes off and humidity is around 87-95%. There are also trays of perlite on the bottom of the martha. I also have a mattress pump on a repeat cycle timer that turns on for 15 seconds every hour for FAE. The temps are a bit higher than ideal, normally between 75-79, but I don't have AC in the basement and can't really do much else except for have a fan circulate some air and put ice cubes in the humidifier.  I have a 6500k fluorescent light on a 12/12 cycle

The tubs are WBS spawned to HighMountain Compost (1.5 quart jars to 5lbs of poo) and are uncased. I have wax paper on them instead that I have been changing every few days.

So... what's with my poor pinset?  There isn't much primordia either. Aside from the temps, everything seems to be in order.  I know that casing > wax paper but I have always had success with wax paper so I never really saw the need to experiment with casing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

87-95% RH is on the low end. Especially since that sub in uncased (I think). Those numbers might work if it was cased. Anyway, the 3 contributing factors for pinsets are FAE, RH, and light. FAE and RH being the two to worry about. You might have some more pop up.

Remember, you want as much FAE as you can get without compromising RH. The key is to balance it out.

I was under the impression that anything above 90% was acceptable for a tub in a greenhouse.

Sorry, I meant to say 90% humidity is okay for a tub in a greenhouse. I generally refer to tubs as casings.

I'm really as stumped as you.

Your mycellium looks beautiful.

I'd like to know the answer as well.

Healthy looking myc, keep that rH up by shortening your off cycle to ~5-10 minutes.

The tubs are about to explode...... you might have a few early birds, but I have a feeling you're in for a nice surprise tomorrow or the day after.

80% rh is fine for a CASING. for cakes, which is what you have there, 99% is desired.

That makes sense.

I shortened the cycle to 7 minutes off.

I'll update in a few days.

Genetics? Is your grain from multi-spore? This would have something to do with it. So would substrate depth. And like the others said, more time.

Old info. You want as close to 100% as you can get for EVERYTHING.

That is BS IMO. Once again, everything here is theory so who really knows. I think with a cased substrate you want the RH inside the FC to be lower than that of the casing surface. This way you will get lots of transpiration. Pins love transpiration.

Where did you read that you want 100% for everything? Back that statement up with something.

Actually, you want to keep it as close to 100% as you can get through harvest, so no you can't have too much humidity.  If the ultrasonic runs too long, you can easily flood or soak your substrate though, and that would be bad.  Get an analog hygrometer at a cigar shop.  Mine were all under $20 and have been working for years.

Casing layers should NEVER be allowed to dry out or they won't pin.  They need to be misted several times per day.  You want as close to 100% humidity as you can get, and as much air exchange as you can get, so that requires a lot of misting.

There are better examples, but I am too lazy to go find them. And you are correct. Everything is just theories.

Personally I trust what RR says.

Hmmm.... I disagree with that. Either way works, but I trust my understanding of science more than I trust anything else.

I wonder if he's talking about 100% on the casing layer. I would agree with that, but not the rest of the FC. It should be lower.

Read my above edits... He's said the 100% thing about casings A LOT recently.

I do see your point. That's what makes this place great, lots of opinions!

I personally have never had an issue with a 100%rh FC and casings.
