cubensis?
    #8581284 -

Hey, I live in South Georgia and I have never hunted mushrooms before, but today i went by a cow field on the way to the house and i noticed several mushrooms growing, oddly thou there were not growing in the open field but infront of a small wooded around a tree stump at the cornor of the field. The mushrooms were a biedge color, kind of oval like shaped cap that had a dark area at the top of them. It rained this afternoon, and I just went by the field a few minitues ago, and noticed that the mushrooms seemed to have grown and a few had a nipple looking shape at the top of them. Do these sound like they could be Cubensis? Do cubensis normally grow around wood patches? Just want a few responses so i can determine if its worth going to pick them tonight, thanks.

Its possible. However, cubensis do not grow on wood. So if they were cubes they were growing from where a cow shit in the field. Its really hard to say there are some cubensis look alikes the only way is to go take a look. It just rained so go check it out.

P. cubensis only grows directly from poo, it does not grow on wood.

If there was old cow pies over there they may be cubensis.

P. cubensis does grow from rotting (actually stagnant or 'sour') tree stumps.  They also grow on dung.  Statements like "they only grow from poop" reflect something the 'expert' has been told once by another 'specialist'.  To give you an example, cats only eat mice!  Okay, try feeding your cat a bit of fish or some ham off your sandwich!  The fungi makes no decision about growing, it just grows. Are these titular mycologists expecting those of us actually trained to believe that these fungi spread across our planet following a cow?  I would presume a cow protected by 3,000 Hindu’s to prevent it being eaten. There are many species of fungi.  There are many pictures of P. cubensis.  There are gobbets of text that tell you what the identification of the fungus involves.  It is not rocket science, just pay attention looking at things like retracting membranes etc. To everyone:  P. cubensis CAN and DOES grow on other things but dung!  FACT!

No they don't.  The mushrooms you saw were probably Psathyrella, Stropharia or Hypholoma.

Pics or it didn't happen.

The only way to make cubensis grow off a tree stump is to sterilize it and inoculate it with only that mycelium.
