Question for nutrition experts
    #8562117 -

I have fallen in love with avocados.

In fact, I would like to eat one everyday.

I always avoided them because I heard they contain ungodly amounts of fat.  I checked at www.nutritiondata.com and, although they are high in fat, it isn't quite an ungodly amount.

One avocado (200g)
322 calories (77% from fat)
29g fat (4g saturated)
13g dietary fibre (!)

There is very little saturated fat in the rest of my diet, I eat very healthfully.  I'm just wondering if there is anything at all that is unhealthy about unsaturated fat other than its abundance of calories?  Some conditioned response inside me shudders when I see "29g of fat per serving" but is there really a good reason for that?  I mean, 322 calories is not a hell of a lot compared to my daily intake, and usually I only eat a half an avocado.

I just had a glorious avocado and tomato sandwich and I'm hoping to make this a staple.

Here's a short article on the topic:

http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/avocado-advantage

And a much longer one:

http://www.avocado.org/healthy-living/nutrition

Replacing animal-source saturated fat with mono- and poly-unsaturated fats is an excellent idea.  I would recommend that you watch your total caloric intake if you are concerned with gaining weight, but otherwise there is no reason to curb your passion for the avocado!   Adequate essential fat intake is very important for optimum health, and can help curb your appetite by increasing satiety.

Great articles, thanks.  I'm going to go full speed ahead into avocado land.  Oh this is a great day...

I have enjoyed avocados since I was a baby.  My mother used to give me 1/2 an avocado & a spoon, and I would scoop it out of the shell.  Mmmm...

Have you tried avocado salsa?

Slightly firm avocado, cubed
Red onion, minced
Canned jalapeno or fresh minced to taste
fresh lime juice
fresh-pressed garlic

toss & marinate in fridge for at least 2 hours (if you can stand to wait that long!)  Serve with thick tortilla chips.

Half an avocado, filled with balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, and a healthy helping of fresh garlic... so delicious.

I eat one everyday lately.  They go with (or without) everything.  I just eat them plain, whatever I am having I just eat one on the side.

I only read the first one, but I'll have to agree.

In your first post you alluded to the calories in sat. fat.  All fats have essentially the same calories per gram, the difference is negligible for all fats I'm aware of, so the sturated vs. unsaturated won't matter for that.

But like the first article says, unlike the conventional wisdom, unsaturated fat is actually healthy, presuming your total caloric intake and perhaps weight doesn't change.

Infact, the risk of heart disease and heart attack, which is much more relevant than blind stats like cholesteral numbers, is dependant upon the percentage of you fat that is unsaturated.  The higher the level, the less likely you are to develop problems.  And for people with a given saturated fat intake, additional fat intake in the form of polyunsaturated, and I believe monounsturated fats, is actually healthy.

So start thinking in terms more of the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats.  Polyunsaturated are very healthy, and saturated fats/transfats unhealthy.  The ratio of the sat. to unsat. is actually more important then the total amount of fat, provided you keep your weight stable.

Kinda offends the conventional wisdom, but more and more evidence says it.  As long as your weight is healthy, you can eat pleny of fat, provided its not saturated or trans fat.

I believe all my statements are correct, but feel free to correct me, anyone, if they're not.  I read that study on the women nurses over decades where they found that the ratio of fats is far more predictive of heart problems than the total amount of fat for a given body mass index, and all the commentators and other research seems to think that applies to men too

Interesting stuff given how much it is different than the "fat is fat" stuff I was taught in grade school.

I eat very little saturated fat, so I'm sure my ratio is under control

if your eating purely vegetable (saturated) fats, you have nothing to worry about.  Actually its good for you.  But as long as your following your intuition about what you consume your doing good.

It's fine. But if you want to start losing weight, then remove avocados from your diet.

Simply because, as you noted, they've got a very large amount of fat - if you go on a diet and start counting your fat intake you'll probably decide that cutting out avocados is a very easy way to remove 29g from your diet.
It's entirely up to you, but at least you're armed with the facts
