Shroomism...drums
    #8564686 -

So, I was going to PM you this, but saw you were on and figured others could benefit from this, too!

I was pretty inspired by your drumming, and I think I want to get a drum sometime before next year's NE gathering so I can join the circle this time!  Got any suggestions on where to look and what to look for?

How much should I spend to get a decent drum?

Between $100-300.

Djembes are very versatile, and most have a nice deep thud.

Doumbeks are more of a pop (I have a metal one).

  Tablas are interesting.

Well... the absolute best place to find a good hand drums... in my experience.. is at festivals.. or specific drum vendors. I've seen some pretty sweet ass deals at random vendors at various fests, where I wish I had the cash to buy them at the time. I had an old drum a friend gave to me but I passed that on to another friend.

I got my current drum on ebay, straight from Ghana. Ebay is awesome. Do a search for Djembe, Doumbec, Conga, Bougarabou, Tabla or Sabar (all different types of hand drums)... Djembe is the most common.. vandago's and OMR's and mine were all djembes, but variety is good. I'd get a Djembe to start with at any rate.. I hope to one day amass a huge collection of drums from around the world.

As for what to look for. I'd recommend a drum that was made in West Africa. Ghana is one of the more popular producers of hand drums, the original drums are made in Africa and it helps support their local economy, so it only makes sense. I would HIGHLY suggest getting a REAL drum as opposed to a synthetic one, some people don't care but I think it makes a big difference. If you get a drum made from somewhere else, just look for the same things you would look for in an authentic african drum.

- The body of the drum should be one whole piece - carved out of wood. It should be thick... a half inch or more. In general.. the thicker the better.
The type of wood isn't as important.. as long as it's whole wood. But the different wood types do produce different tones. Alder, Birch, Maple, and Mahogony are all common. Mine was made from African Purple Heart, which if you can find a drum made with that.. that's a good solid wood.

- Animal skin head. Typically this is goat skin, although different animal skins are sometimes used. If there's still fur on it around the rim, even better.

- Rope tuners. You want one with rope tuners. This is usually a high-tensile parachute-type cord. It should have some lead line (extra rope) hanging out for future tuning purposes.

Those are the three main things to look for. A synthetic drum is usually made out cheap/thin/particle board-type wood, has a synthetic head, and metal tuners you twist to tighten or loosen.

The disadvantage to buying a drum online is that you'll never know what kind of tone it has until it gets to your door, so you have to take their word on it. But the advantage is that you have TONS of options to choose from and you can probably find one pretty cheap. There are plenty of good drum vendors online that look like they have very good quality drums, although some of them seem a little expensive.

For a Djembe about the size and quality of the one I have.. you can expect to pay anywhere from $80-300.
With ~150 being about the median you should expect to pay for a quality handmade drum.

Thanks for the in depth description!  Very helpful!

I don't have $150 to drop right now, but this will give me a nice project to practice over the winter months.

No problem.. always in the mood to help out an aspiring musician

Just before you do, look around at lots of different drums and compare them and I'm sure you can find an awesome deal.

Be careful getting drums with African heads, because they aren't well-suited for North American climate and they can bust easily if you're not careful.. (happened to my djembe which was hand-crafted in Africa, and I still haven't gotten it re-headed.. pain in the ass)

Ebay is good but obviously you can't play it before you buy it.. so you're taking somewhat of a risk in not liking the sound. Read lots of reviews and you should be fine though.. Like Shroomism said, the best place to find deals is music or even Renaissance festivals, if you find the right vendor.

(I need to get a new drum myself with my next paycheck, so let me know if you see any outstanding deals on Ebay)

Definitely get a djembe to start out with, they are the most basic yet versatile IMO...

Ah true I hadn't thought of that.. the African heads are usually more suited to a dry climate... strung up that way as well. I was always just told to take extra special care of the head so it would last a very long time, and it has so far :crosses fingers:. Main thing I try to watch out for is humidity.. which... I guess you're pretty fucked with that in florida :haha:

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do some searching around when I have money to spend.  That cheaper one is pretty tempting to just snag up, though....

lol.. that drum is bigger then that kid.

Yeah man, those smaller djembes are clutch in any circle. But if you want the BOOOOM bass you gotta get a monster
Though those little guys can put out some serious bass themselves sometimes. I just love how every drum almost always has a different tone. That's why I wanted like, 30 drums in that circle.

Like I said though.. those little guys are clutch in a drum circle. You can get some of that crazy PATTA POP PIPPITY POPPA TAT shit going on that you can't really get with the bigger drums.. they complement each other well. But I'm down for switching drums around anytime.. IF YOU CAN HANDLE THE BASS!

I think my next drums are gonna be some tablas. Those things are so badass.

I loooooove the sound of tablas, I'd love to be able to do those little slide-pop moves.
