It's a djembe, and it's really cool. Now if I could only figure out how to play it

Awesome! Djembes rock!

They have three basic tones - Bass, Tone, and Slap

bass - hit the middle of the drum with the base of the palm

tone - hitting right outside the rim

slap - fingertips hitting the rim

here's a decent site - http://www.larryswanson.com/drum-and-dance/djembe-technique.htm

www.djembe.net

lots of info and notated rhythms.

btw, notated rhythms are great for programming into drum sequencers. there are groups of rhythms that are designed to work together.

Practice by yourself... but playing in a drum circle can help you improve a LOT! And people will help you out learning new things if you are a beginner.

wow i just googled shofar, that is a very interesting instrument.
Apart from its liturgical uses the shofar was closely connected with magical symbolism. Its blast destroyed the walls of Jericho, and in the Dead Sea scrolls we read that during battles shofar blowers sounded a powerful war cry to instill fear into the hearts of the enemy
very cool man. any one else have a cool or unique instrument?

did another google on that bad boy. eight holed double reeded wind
The sound of the shehnai is considered particularly auspicious. For this reason it is found in temples and is an indispensable component of any North Indian wedding.
very cool.

i think one of those monstorous horns from the ricola commercials would be amazing... especialy to play in the middle of the night it would sound like those things from war of the worlds...heh very cool. you know what i saw but didnt buy? finger symbols. give em to my girlfriend and have her belly dance... maybe next time.
