I was a master at saving money when i was a kid. Now so much anymore. Kinda ironic I quess.

I still keep a set amount aside at all times for whatever happens. I've been really good about not touching it. I try to just forget about it.  It works out well. You live like your poor, but when times really do hit hard, you got some back up until you can sort things out.

That said. Between old cars, and old motorcycles. I'm pretty broke, pretty often. :smirk:

Set up a savings account with an automatic deposit every payday, so that you don't have to actually do anything, savings will grow.

i was always terrible with money. bitta weed here and there was my only income, so just enough to get me by, buy food etc, father was paying for accomodation at the time.

i'm back living in the family house so don't have any expenses except for food, and doing well keeping most of my money untouched and just living off 50 a week or something. i suppose its just cutting out the impulse buys. And even if i have more excess money than i need can't even find anything to spend it on anymore. it's weird.

My check is deposited to my checking account every payday, and It transfer 400 to 600 of it directly into savings. Once your money is in savings, just forget about it, and your bag -o-gold will grow all on its own.

oh.and Use the fucking bank.

I know it sounds stupid, but I saved all my money in cash like the fucking depression or some shit long ago. It takes the willpower of a saint to keep that shit.

I've known others to do this too, saying they don't trust banks.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Savings account, direct deposit paychecks, etc are all awesome ways to keep money out of your hands, and in the bank.

I have a nasty habit of seeing things for sale right around 100 bucks +- and saying " oh it's cool it's only a hundred bucks". That shit adds up,hah. obviously. Set yourself a low limit of spending on non crucial items. one that is based on your income, then take another 20-30% or something out of it. If you are really bad about impulse purchases, save money aside for that too. Since i buy/sell so much old junk. I've come up woth lots of ways to always have that little bit on the side for when you come upon some classified for some deal of a lifetime bullshit.

You say it as if it's somebody else's fault. "It's really starting to get annoying."  Just save some money man!  Or do what the people above me said, that sounded like it would work.

Yeah I'm bad about that if I have money in my pocket I'm going to find a way to spend it.  Putting it in the bank helps some, but I still have a tendency to empty my checking account.  Its like one of my teachers used to say if you make $20,000 a year you will be wearing shoes, clothes, driving a car that cost you $20,000 a year.  If you make $100,000 a year everything you need cost you $100,000 a year.  You spend what you .

Yes but savings and investments are just another way to spend your money, usually a smarter way than burning it all on momentary pleasures.

A great way to save is to not increase the cost of your lifestyle when you get a pay increase.  Don't get a more expensive car, or more expensive clothes, and you'll have a huge cushion for savings, travel, investments, and emergencies.

Statistically most millionaire's cars cost the same as somebody who earns a standard five figure salary.  Spending money on stupid shit is the number one way to stay at a lower financial state than you want to be at.

I do pretty well with saving and not buying things I don't need.

There for a while I had a shitty job and refused to get any type of gov assistance, so I learned real quick how to keep a strict budget.

Now I have a job that pays 40k/yr and a second little job that brings about $6k/yr, so I find myself slipping and buying stupid things... but I have a 401(k) and two IRAs, one regular IRA from my job then a Roth IRA through State Farm...

I also make sure there is at least $700 in my checking account at all times.

I just bought new carpet, complete with padding and install fees, and paint... checked my account today and it was at $420 (insert high school giggle) and that completely makes me feel stressed. Like I might as well have $0 that's how stressed I feel.

Were all broke. If in America, only ~1% is allowed to be able to save money. The rest of us are supposed to be getting ready for REVOLUTION.

I'm serious though. Unless you live with your parents and have no responsibility. If you can't save money in that case... well, giving up heroin did wonders for me a few years ago. Now... I'm good. Money is saved.

It takes practice.

i think people pay for things they dont need or really want. if people simplified their life by living in cheaper area (getting more for less), not paying bills for crap like phones and tvs, drive a cheap car, not eat out, people would have a little extra money and less stress.

people know even less about how to spend money on something that has a return or pays for itself over time. i try to find as many things that do that.

The same teacher after telling us that would follow up with telling us about this guy.  He had a degree and made plenty of money, but he wouldn't buy an expensive car or even one that ran good.  He would go find a piece of junk car that would cost him a couple hundred bucks and just drive it a few months until it broke down.  Just leave where it broke down and go buy another piece of junk car.  The point I left out that my teacher was trying to get at was what you are saying it really helps in the future to put some money back and save.  You don't have to buy expensive stuff and waste money.  I've just got that attitude its money it's meant to be spent, and you can't take it to the grave with you.  I guess I need to get rid of that attitude once I start making good money though.

saving money alows you to spend your money on long term objectives, whatever that may be... setting up your own studio, starting a buisness, buying a new montain bike, haveing money for really bad situations.

that guy who bought the busted cars is lucky, he never had to worry about his cars. sometimes its nice when things are cheap and if they fail you they wont set you back. cars are a depreciating asset and the only function is to get you from point a to point b. the cheaper it can do that, the better i say!

Noooo

Thats how it used to be, not anymore. If you live in the US you have to get at least 7-10% interest or your savings won't even correct to inflation.

You got to invest it - savings accounts are death traps nowadays. You got to beat that 7-10% somehow.

Three basic ways to try:

1..invest in superduper stocks (see the monies forum)
2..buy precious metals (particularly gold/silver)
3..invest in assets in your life - stuff that will last you long and saves you expenses preferably.

The odds today are AGAINST a savings account. Such a scheme you suggested is a great way to free up money, but then you have to put that money to work for you because a savings account won't cut it.

One little fault that most people fail to see in the "you cant take it with you" line of thought is RETIREMENT. You might not be able to take it with you, but you can sure as hell spend it for all those years after you stop working.

My grandfather retired at 60 with a few million, and didnt do shit but fish, ride horses, hunt, and travel the world with my grandmother until he died at 75. Thats 15 years with no steady income other than the stock market.

While saving money is important, learning not to fall into the bullshit consumerist trap is even more valuable. Most people dont realize home much of there money they really spend on pointless nonsense like going to see movies, eating out all the time, sodas, and snacks at the gas station, DRUGS.....ETC. When I cut all of the pointless BS purchases that didnt even make me any happier I easily saved myself a quarter of my income.
