Poor Man's Pod for edibles
    #8529294 -

I'm thinking about making a couple "poor mans pods" for growing various edibles like shiitake, oysters, beech mushrooms and lion's mane . I know some edibles like oysters require a lot of FAE . Would I have to alter the poor mans pod at all for such edibles ? Such as drilling tons of small holes in the sides and lid like for a shotgun chamber ? I know I could just use perlite but want to give geolite or leca a try instead . I'll also put a 6500K light in each of them.  ... Thanx ...

I wouldnt think that you would need to drill a bunch of holes.
The air pump should be enough to give proper FAE as long as its big enough.

None of the edibles you listed will do good with an air pump and a poor mans pod. With the exception of the shiitake. Isn't the poor mans pod a 2 or 3 liter coke bottle. I have seen pics of reishi in poor man pods that seem to do very well aside from not being able to form a conk. If you do opt for a poor mans pod yes I would put lots of tiny holes and perlite in the bottom to increase the FAE. The beech would do good, but only after you get the things to form primordia.

Any particular reason or thought on why you want to do poor man pods? Some kinda itch to see if it will work or something like that! I think it would be cool if you did that and it worked. Why not go bigger into a tub and perlite.

Anyways. I think your best bet would be in a shaded airy window sill with the poor man pod and a lot of tiny holes. That is if you opt for it. I wish you luck!

Not a coke bottle  This is a PmP , created by the genius of Magash himself :

It uses Leca/Geolite/Hydroton and airstones + airpump for humidity and air exchange . I got a really cheap deal on a couple Tropic Aire reptile humidifiers off ebay so I might try using those with this setup as well . It may or may not be overkill , guess we'll see when it's all set up and I check humidity .

Oh I see! I'd go with holes instead. Fish pumps are for cubes and shiitake. Co2 tollerant species.

The fish pump in the Pmp Actually does remove the Co2 by forcing air into the bottom of the FC and holes in the lid allows for it to escape.

It might force co2 out, but if the pump is in the house and pumping inside air into the chamber you are not really pumping in a good mixture of oxygenated air through that tiny little hole. It might be different if you placed the pump outdoors and pumped to the inside. Cubes and shiitake and a few others do well inside because they thrive in higher co2 areas ie. like in your house. I doubt he will have much luck with gourmet type species in a unit like that . More FAE will be available if he goes with a hole punched container and set it by a window or in a barn or even in  the shade outside. Lots of the gourmet mushrooms we enjoy feasting on require more FAE than you think, to get anything descent out of your substrate.

Documentation?

I've never seen a fish pump 'force' CO2 out of the top of a large tub.  It might 'dilute' the CO2 somewhat, but it sure as heck isn't going to push it uphill and out.  Placing  light nearby that will cause convective currents in the tub will do a far better job, but why break something, just so it can be 'fixed'?

Learning to grow mushrooms with cubensis is a little bit like learning to ride a bicycle with training wheels.  All those bad habits must be unlearned before the kid can actually ride a real bike.

Edibles are another level of difficulty over cubes, so much more attention to their care must be taken.  Even a shotgun terrarium will load up with stale air enough to suppress fruiting with most edible species if you fail to fan enough.  That's why edible growers use mini-greenhouses with massive air exchange.  As lipa said, Shiitake is a CO2 tolerant species, but that's about it.  The others require a larger environment to fruit properly, and in no way is an aquarium pump going to be sufficient.

Furthermore, geolite and hydroton are intended to sink in water in order to hold root systems stable under hydroponic cultivation.  They are not composed with a high surface area and make a piss-poor substitute for perlite in terrariums.  I have three large bags of hydroton in the garage.  I wish there was a mycological use for them-my nerves won't allow me to use them for their intended purpose anymore.

You could put a couple of small tyvek patches in the lower part of the terrarium, with the pump piped in at the top. That should get rid of the CO2 much better.
