"least of the evils".
That was my opinion when I voted for kerry. I still feel bad about that. I now like to repeat the mantra now though that voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.
The world isnt as black and white as you make it out to be. Things rarely meet up to my preference exactly, but not voting is worse than ignorence, its apathetic.

that is rather black and white assesment of my response. I made no mention of not voting. However, voting is by no means the acid test of democracy. Read an article by the same title by Paul Durrenberger in Applied Anthropology News.

I hear you, but not talking at all is not the best way to deal with things, I mean he is still your father and when he passes you might really regret avoiding him all together just because of his political and religious views. That is why I just try to avoid talking about politics and religion with my father all together. When he brings it up, I always just change the subject to a lighter topic, since it is pointless arguing about things we will never agree about.

That really didnt make a whole lot of sense.
And AMERICA IS NOT A DEMOCRACY! ITS A REPUBLIC. Read The United States Constitution by James Madison with input from others.

I apologize, my original response was in haste. I failed to give you the correct name of the publication. It is the Society For Applied Anthropology Specifically a copy of vol 15(1)3-5. Here is a link. In case you are unaware, the article is on pages 3-5. Read it, and than tell me what exactly does not make sense.
My original statement was that voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. You misinterpreted my response and somehow interpreted it as me expressing a notion that I would not vote. I quipped that it was rather black and white assessment of my statement. When in reality it was more a misunderstanding.
Lastly, I am well aware that the United States is a representative republic. I don't think you need the capital letters, but I find it amusing. I too am normally the one who chimes in and corrects people who say that America is a democracy; however, again you misunderstood my point. I was referring to a title of an article.

People who vote for the "lesser of two evils" are fucking jackasses, and are why we get a predominantly two party system that has evils shared between the parties, and neither one willing to do a damn thing despite public support, i.e. Iraq (till very recently no difference between the pres. candidates in teh lead in both parties); Earmarks; Government spending, et cet
Anyone who thinks that a candidate/party that recieves votes but doesn't win has "wasted the votes" of their supporters is foolish. When it comes time to build a base for a proposal or new candidate compromises must be made, and even if you don't have a majority or candidate in power, those voices are heard, acknowledged, and catered too.
Look at foreign legislatures with many parties, they all compromise and appeal to the others to build a base of support.
Libertarianism, ftw.
Lesser of two evile= strangling democracy
Vote socialist, vote green, vote nazi, whatever, just vote who you like.
When more people start finding out about third parties, via the internet, I hope we'll start to see real pressure put on the parties.
I would love to vote republican if they'd get any candidate that was consistant and didn't abandon conservatism when it comes to social issues, and didn't sell out their principles for their stupid project
