Much of the developed world has a more advanced system than FPTP like the US or UK. Australia has instant-runoff, which works quite well (though it still has a two-party system) while New Zealand and Germany have an extremely advanced multiple-party-preferential method. Since America was the country that started the big democratic experiment, it really should lead the world in election methods too.


Any system that works to ensure that minority opinion get representation are much more likely to work for the congress/parlimentary elections than they are to elect a single president/pm.

The simplest version would be to count the popular vote and allocate seats according to a rounding of the percentages.  I would definitely be in favor of this type of system.  Any system with the same intent to represent a minority opinion for president/pm seems contradictory to the purpose of that position in my opinion, so I would NOT be in favor of implementing those rules.  I think third party votes are already effective enough as is to shift the ideology of the main candidates.

If I were to take any step at all in this matter, I would do away with the party system altogether, although there is nothing actually in place holding it there, so I don't know how this would be acheived accept for outright banning them, although there might be another way (mostly likely through non-legislation methods).

I'd say it has - the Greens. Typically the vote results look something like this:

Coalition 45%
Labor 45%
Greens 10%

But since Greens preferences mostly flow to Labor, Labor wins by 5%. This means that it's VERY important for Labor to keep the Greens on side by having (somewhat) compatible policies.

How can anyone want to stay at war anymore? I don't get it.

If the terrorists were fighting in your back yard and the war could get called off if you voted for Obama would you do it? If your mom and dad and cousins all died and all you had to do to stop the war was vote differently would you feel a little different then?

So many Americans only care for the benefit of their own people and while we're bitching and moaning about paying too much for gasoline people in Iraq are burying their relatives. Fuck McCain and fuck this war.
