 Proxy wont work, help!

I cant seem to get a proxy to work! Im running XP home edition. Here's what i did to set up the proxy:
1. Open browser window
2. Go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections
3. The next step depends on your OP sys, I have XP so I go to LAN Settings,
just look for where it says Use Proxy Server.
I tried at least 10 "anonomous" and "high anonomous" proxies and none of them hid my real IP. Here's where i checked if they worked: http://www.all-nettools.com/pr.htm .
I need help getting them to work, any ideas?

Fd3000,
I just started experimenting with proxies myself. It sounds like you don't have your settings quite right. I have win98, so my situation may be a little different from yours, but the documentation I read said that if you're messing with LAN settings you're probably in the wrong place. For 98, you do internet options, Connections, then highlight the dial-up you're using. After that, you click on settings. From there, you check the proxy box then click advanced. It is here that you enter the proxy ip and port number in the HTTP box. Like I said, this may be different for you, but with LAN's, the general setup is that multiple computers on the local network connect to a local computer that is serving as a proxy. That machine then contacts the ISP, with the other local machines running through it. So all the LAN proxy settings should do is identify that local machine that is serving as a proxy, not the anoymous proxy that is contacted after your computer goes through your ISP. But then again, I don't use XP and am new to this, so I may be full of shit! I'd suggest you dig around and see if there is any other place you can enter a proxy.

Fd,
After thinking about it, I'm not sure that the version of windows that you're using should make a difference. All of the steps I took were in Internet Explorer 6.0, and although I could be wrong, it would seem that would be the same regardless of what operating system you're using. So, on IE 6.0, I goto tools, internet options, connections, highlight dialup you're using, click settings, check proxy server box, click advanced, then put in the ip and port for the anonymous server. After that, just click ok on all the open windows. Hope this helps!

BTW who runs free anonymous proxys ? the x file people man thats who.......

FD, I can't understand why it won't work for you. I have had no probs doing it like that, because that is how you HAVE to do it. And if you have a cable connection you are on a NETWORK, thus the need to change your LAN settings. You can try other Proxies, but remember that most aren't truly anonymous. Good Luck

I have a cable connection and no network. Just me, my computer, my cable connection and XP home edition....

EDIT- I tested this method of setting up a proxy on my friends computer, worked fine! He has the same OS, same connection etc.....
