Torpark is pretty good, but it's also pretty slow (due to a lack of contributed bandwidth to the TOR project). I usually have to disable images to get acceptable browsing speeds.
Also, it doesn't support network proxies, which is a bit of a pisser.

check out the switchproxy extention for firefox. that used in conjunction with a few anonymous proxy servers should keep you fairly ok. use hushmail for email, too.

The problem with anonymous proxy servers is... well, they're usually not anonymous. At all. They're usually misconfigured corporate servers of some kind or another, and fair enough, if it's a proxy to surf porn on, then that's fine, but if you're looking for actual, unlogged anonymity, you're not really getting it.

thats why i suggested switchproxy. he can use it when really exploring something big brother doesnt approve of. he can set it to swtich his proxy every minute if he wants. if someone goes through the effort of tracing all the switches through various proxies of differeing anonymity... well, ur already screwed.

Couldn't you just pick up a wifi connection through the airwaves if you were close enough? Wouldn't that be anonymous?

If you live in a built-up urban area, there's a good chance you might be able to find an unencrypted unsecured wireless signal to use. It would provide a certain layer of security, but some points to consider;
it's illegal to use someone else's wireless
aside from that, you have to be ok with the fact that you're stealing bandwidth someone else has paid for
you're trusting the person who's signal it is, because most things you do on the internet is going through their hardware in plaintext
aside from that, packet sniffing will put together all plaintext you send for anyone within range (anyone nearby can examine your surfing habits)
there is a (very small) chance of being caught, either by being traced (very unlikely), or by having someone packet sniff and find clues to your identity (still pretty unlikely) , and being held liable not just for whatever it was you wanted to hide from your ISP but also for stealing wireless
