Maybe one of ya'll tech-head types can figure out a solution for me here...I usually do most of my surfing and research at school, as the connection is much faster than mine...I try and visit the Lycaeum this morning, for a bit of Trip Report with my coffee, and I get this bullshit...
You Have Accessed a Restricted Resource You have received this page because you have attempted to access an internet resource currently being restricted on MATC Library workstations. Internet resources currently restricted include, but are not limited, to gaming, chat and pornography web sites.
MATC policy states that the Internet is "not provided as a medium of free expression when unrelated to the academic programs or operations of MATC" (EE0202)
If you have questions or concerns regarding the sites being restricted, please see the librarian on duty at the reference desk.
Fuckers. Someone please tell me theres a way to get past this? I mean, not like its the end of the world, just an extreme inconvienence.

When you request a website, the proxy at the school checks it against a list and will either allow or disallow it.
These lists are constructed by hand (usually created by the creator of the filtering software), and often the lists don't include the IP address.
The IP for www.lycaeum.org is 4.65.26.11
So copy this into your address bar:
http://4.65.26.11
If the proxy doesn't have the IP in the list then you can get to the site, If it does then theres not a lot you can do on your side of the proxy.

Yeah, if you want you can go through someone elses proxy server.
This may sound a bit confusing so if anyone needs help with it just PM me
As Jackal said, when you go to your school, the computer that you're sitting at is "filtered" through something called a proxy server. Its bascially a type of software thats configured into a server to help direct multiple workstations blah blah blah.. . thats not the important thing
The important thing is that proxy servers can be setup to allow or not allow you to go through them. If you can't go through your proxy server, you can't get onto the sites that you want.
So, what you need to do first is to simply get out and onto the internet. Doing this means getting through your schools proxy server. If you go to www.yahoo.com you're on the internet. TA DA, you're done. The reason being is becuase that website (I should say that websites servers IP address) isn't black listed on YOUR schools proxy server.
So whats a girl (or guy) to do?
Get onto the internet, and go to ANOTHER proxy server, and surf the net from there.
For example!
Go to school with your coffee in hand, log into a computer, and go here - http://www.somebody.net/ and try their free "test drive". You can also go here - http://www.safeproxy.org/ but you'll have to pay a small fee.
After that, you'll be surfing through a different proxy server. SO the proxy server that you go through at your school will only see that you're at one website. And that site is the new proxy server which you're using as a portal to any site you want
Hope that wasn't too unclear.

Thats pretty fucking cool...Somebody.net is blocked by my silly computer here, but I can link to it off of a Yahoo! Search. I dont really know what I'm doing though...I'd call tech support, but I think they're the Nazi's who did this in the first place...

I wrote this many moons ago for the Bess Internet Filter used by many educational groups.
Enjoy.

No threats, promises, guarantees, or warranties implied. It's been a few years since I've even opened it up.
I would only use this on a school PC btw, I would hate to have it corrupt your registry on your home PC.

You have ways of opening files on some computers.
You have to be smart about it, and yes, I've been denied many of times, but then again, many of times, if given the right amount of time, I can figure a way to open the files.
Hint: notepad is your friend.
