Exercise/workout dillema
    #8479701 -

I am debating on buying a new bike to ride to and from work, and anywhere else in town if its not THAT far away, but I am also thinking about spending that money on a gym membership. I know the gym will tone my body more than biking would, but would biking slim me down also (obviously without the toning).

I am just wondering because I feel working out would be better for me (superficially) but I wont be going to the gym during school, and I feel like everything I gained over the summer will be a waste. What do you guys think?

I would get the bike and get some dumbells and a bench instead of a gym membership. You can work out at home whenever you want. There are huge amounts of exercise equipment available second hand for cheap. People get rid of it all the time.

Muscle 'tone' or definition, comes from reducing your bodyfat much more than from building muscle. Biking is great for this, and you can still lift weights to build muscle. If you want to reduce bodyfat, you'll have to make sure your eating is under control. Depending on your eating habits, you can cut hundreds of calories a day easily with only a few changes.

This is only applicable to visible muscle tone, and only if the individual already has muscle under their fat.   If someone is not already toned, reducing body fat will only result in a smaller body, not more muscle tone.

I agree that the bike would be a better purchase than the gym membership.  Most of those who pay for a gym membership do not attend the gym, so why waste your $$?  The bike can serve as both training and transportation, and it will be convenient and easy to use.  You can build muscle using bodyweight exercises, or purchase a few pieces of equipment.  I recommend a resistance band kit (the cords, not the flat bands), dumbbells and a medicine ball to start with.

i would buy the bike. that's cheap transport and extra cardio as an added benefit. for muscle building everywhere else, get some dumbbells, kettlebells, do some pushups/squats/lunges/pull ups, etc. at the gym you can use the stairmill for $50 a month, or you can go to your local HS stadium and run up bleachers for free.

i have mixed feelings about my gym membership. i exercise at least 4-5 times a week doing the above mentioned methods. my gym is crowded as hell until after 8 pm most days. at this point i only about once a wk to use the pool and stairmill (and to watch the hunnies sweat:smirk:)

there is a book by some Russian named Pavel Tsatsouline called "the naked warrior" apparently - i havent read the book - he discusses exercises that can get you ripped that require nothing but using your own body weight.

Don't waste your money on traditional weights or bicycles or gym memberships. Get kettlebells. They give quick results. They combine cardio, resistence, and ballistic movement. They cause rapid development and no huge investment required. In 3 months I went from using a 35 pound bell to handling 73 pounds of weight with one hand. My flexibility is also greater than it has ever been.

agreed.

get some dumbells, maybe a bench and utilize the best piece of equipment you have.... your body. bodyweight exercises are effective at building muscle, toning, and slimming.

bike as much as you feel comfortable with and save yourself some money.

I'm intrigued by kettlebells.

Can you link a site with some good routines?

Sure. Here is a great book with exercises and background on the kettlebells themselves.

how long have you been using KB's? i took a class back in Sept 2006 and was hooked ever since. at first i did a whole routine w/ a bunch of different exercises, but over time i realized that just doing a few basic ones is good enough: snatches, pass-thru lunges. clean and presses, "larry birds" and push ups are all i do some days. 30 minutes of a circuits w/o much rest is killer. i used to love renegade rows, but i sold my second KB to a friend who got into them.

in fact, i have turned several people onto them, mostly women. they would tell me about how it was unbelievable the quickness of the results in getting rid of their saddle bags, etc.

i love the challenge of doing the "10 min secret service snatch test." i do it once a wk. then, of course, is the turkish get up, which can be done w/ dumbbells as well. that is an awesome exercise.

I have been at it since March. I follow the Rite of Passage as described in Pavel Tsatsouline's "Enter the Kettlebell". It is a mixture of extremely high volume clean and presses, swings, getups, and the Secret Service Snatch test. I am on the cusp of breaking 200 snatches in 10 minutes with a 24kg. I also use Pavel's joint mobility work for warm ups.

Yes you are right.  I suppose in my mind muscle tone is synonymous with visible definition.  :justdontknow:

Even a stringbean will notice more muscular definition from losing bodyfat, with no gain in muscle mass.  Everyone has muscles already.

You will love working with the kettle bells, they are very versatile.

What weight are you going to start with?

Rock and roll. You'll love them. Unlike traditional weights you'll find yourself handling them more...just playing around when your not working out. Sometimes I juggle my light 25 and 35 pound bells to pass the time. If you buy 2 bells best start with a 35 and have a 53 to grow into. I use a 62 pound routinely and can press 73 lb with little trouble with one hand. If you order bell through the net get Lifeline Kettlebells. They are high quality, but cheap. They are equivalent to Dragon Door's bells, but they are 30% cheaper, and will be on your dorstep in 2 days. Whatever brand make sure the handles have no burs or seams. Follow Enter the Kettlebell from the start as if it were a religion and you will become wildly powerful. Here is a guidebook by Anthony DiLuglio RKC to the Enter the Kettlebell book. It can be a little shortcut if you want to get started quick, BUT ETK is still needed. The guide works along side of it.
