Testing Digital Scale

Whats a good way to test a scale accurate to a mg?

Is there a universal item that is a certain weight (of a few mg)? Like using a nickel to check the scale because it weighs exactly 5g.. but the item would need to weigh close to a mg instead..

A nickel weighs exactly 5 g's. That means that if you measure in mg it'll say 5000 mg's. If that's off then your scale is off

my scale is calibrated and certified every year, I've had nickles
that weigh more and less than 5 grams, the only way to know the
accuracy of a scale is to get a certified weight set and test it
through a range of weights

Yeah I see what you are saying, but I was wanting to know that small weights are right (under 5mg). And it may be that accurate at higher weights but not small so thats why I didn't use a nickel.

I was trying to save myself from buying a weight set.

What about a certain brand of tooth pick or something.. maybe they have a tight enough tolerance to be an accurate guide?
